DEL MAR

PICO PICO: Sat right off the pace in this 1 1/16 route for $12,500 claimers until the second turn when he came out to make his run. And what a run it was! He stormed down the lane, took the lead past the eighth pole and drew away like a steam train. This gelding was claimed by the high percentage Vann Belvoir, who just may wheel him back before meets end.

UNUSUAL BEAM: Took a good shot with this first time turf horse with Bejarano riding for trainer Barry Abrams. He got in tight right out of the box, took back to last and sat back until the top of the stretch. Tried to circle rivals but had to alter his path when running up the heels of a horse in front of him. Made a nice late run finishing third beaten less than a length. Should break his maiden next time out going long on the grass with a clean trip. $$$$$

DEPUTIFORMER: Was exiting our HTW list and getting on the grass, which we were looking for. Jockey Sutherland just could not get him to relax as he kept pulling her out of the saddle. She had to check him hard off heels leaving the turn and into midstretch, which cost him the race. Still he finished a strong third and bought by one of the best claiming trainers on the earth in Mike Mitchell. He knows the claim game better than any so look for this guy to come back in the right spot and score. $$$

HURRICANE LAKE: Was last while on the backstretch going seven furlongs in this 50k claimer. Moved up around the turn and came four wide into the stretch. Made a big late run and got up on the line despite being bumped hard. Mitchell put up the 50k to claim this one and it looks like a real good pick up.

AMBITONESS: Was last seen finishing second at Churchill Downs in June. She showed up here in the 40k optional claimer and finished a strong third by a length and a quarter despite a bad trip. This girl should pop next time out and could be a real good single in the picks.

I’LL HAVE ANOTHER: When this colt resurfaces (I don’t know where trainer Doug O’Neill will put him) he will be one good bet unless meeting up with super colt Creative Cause, a monster in the making who beat him last time out. I’ll Have Another battled on the front end tooth and nail in the Best Pal Stakes and then took a length lead in the stretch. Was caught by the fast closing Creative Cause, but finished a solid second almost more than three lengths clear of the rest of the field. Will beat any 2yo on the West Coast with the exception Creative Cause. $$$$$
