Race 1

No. 2 ST. MALO’S GATE: Carla Gaines’ well-bred first time starter was going 1 1/16 on the grass, a tough task for a first timer. She took plenty of action and was sent off as the second choice in the betting. She ran a nice even race getting in a little trouble to finish third. This girl is a big time runner and will be hard to beat next time out.

Race 9

No. 9 SURFCUP: First time starter for Bob Baffert was being sent a mile on the grass and this Unusual Heat colt ran huge. He broke slow, was bumped hard and pulling jockey Martin Garcia out of the saddle as he really wanted to be let loose. Garcia steered him outside to avoid trouble and then four wide into the stretch made a big wide run to get up on the line.
