NO. 5 LORD SIMBA: Was exiting our HTW list but had the misfortune of running into the live, even-money, first-time starter and stablemate Valiant Minister. Both Valiant Minister and Lord Simba, who finished second almost 13 lengths clear of the rest, are owned by Baoma Corporation. If these two ran back East they would have been an odds-on entry. Lord Simba will no doubt be a great single in the picks next time out.

NO. 1 NICKNAME: This Grade-I winning filly was in from Churchill Downs and is now in the barn of Richard Mandella who sent her down the hill for her first start on the West Coast and first on the grass. Being by Scatt Daddy she is bred to love the grass and ran big here, surging late to just miss on the line while blowing by the winner past the wire. She really wants longer so if we see her going a mile on the grass next time out we will be singling. $$$$$

NO. 4 KY. COLONEL: Took a horrible beat at 16/1 after going after the 8/5 chalk who was on an easy lead. He just failed to get by him, missing by a head in a very tough loss. No 16/1 next time but a visit to the winner’s circle.
