DEL MAR

DATCATSA GEM: First time starter for trainer Molly Pearson was set and ready for a big race. Was up against a very live runner and looked to be going past the winner but that horse found another gear in motoring away to the win. GEM finished second more than nine lengths clear of the rest.

HOTFLICKARUE: Showed good early speed at this $50k maiden level and looked home when opening up in the stretch, but got caught late by the hot second time starter who was getting a big jockey change. This one should go wire to wire in next start at this level.

PROFESSOR CINCH: Talk about bad luck, this first time starter was sent off at 12/1 and may have been best but bobbled at the start when the ground broke out behind him at the break. Was steadied and far back in this six furlong race. Looked hopelessly beaten but showed good courage to finish fourth almost four lengths better than the fifth place horse. Doubt we will get anywhere near 12/1 next time out but will be betting.

VIVA VEGAS: First time starter for Baffert ran her race but had no shot at the freakish winner, first time starter ZAPPERKAT for Richard Baltas, who just blew the doors off these 2yo fillies. VIVA was a clear second more than four lengths clear of the rest. She will be a solid single next time out. $$$$$

MY UNCLE AL: First time starter for trainer Mike Puype showed good early speed and settled nicely while stalking the pace between runners. Made a nice three-wide run down the lane and was gaining on the 70-cents-on-the-dollar winner with every stride but came up a half length short at a nice 13/1. We give him a big shot in start No. 2.

ATOMIC RULE: Was going 1-1/16 on the grass in this $40k claimer and ran a great race to finish second despite a wide trip. He was claimed by Richard Baltas who will find a winning spot at what will be a square price.

IRISH FREEDOM/ROYAL MO: We always like to look for races that could end up as key, and this could be one. FREEDOM won this 6 furlong maiden race by ¾ of a length with the look of a colt who wants to go longer. MO, who finished second with a great effort, should come right back and break his maiden next out. We see FREEDOM going long next out with a big move up in class.
