After both teams cruised through nonconference play — Houston went 13-0, while BYU was 12-1 — they’ve combined to lose five of their first 10 games in the league.

Still, Houston remains the Big 12 favorite at ahead of No. 7 Kansas. BYU is a longshot to win the league at after starting conference play at 2-3 with losses to Cincinnati, Baylor, and Texas Tech.

Below is everything you need to know about Tuesday’s game, including our Houston vs BYU betting pick.

Houston Cougars (16-2, 9-8-1 ATS)

Sampson’s teams are always excellent defensively, and that’s true again this season. Houston is No. 1 in the country in points allowed at just 51 per game, and it’s also No. 1 in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponent). The Cougars have allowed just one of their five Big 12 opponents this year to break 60 points, but they’re just 3-2 in the league after losing 57-53 to Iowa State and 68-67 to TCU.

Houston has been inconsistent offensively but boasts three solid scorers in LJ Cryer, Emanuel Sharp, and Jamal Shead. Cryer, who transferred to Houston from Baylor last summer, leads Houston offensively at 15 points per game.

BYU Cougars (14-4, 12-6 ATS)

While Houston’s formula for success counts on suffocating defense and just enough offense to grind out low-scoring wins, BYU looks to outgun opponents. Coach Mark Pope’s team averages 85 points per game, 11th-most in the nation, thanks to a lineup full of dangerous shooters. The top seven players in this team’s rotation are all threats from outside. Collectively, BYU is second in the country in both 3-point attempts (33.8) and 3-point makes (12.4) per game. Each player being a threat from 3-point land also creates plenty of driving lanes, which is a big reason BYU is ninth in the country in 2-point FG percentage at around 59%.

BYU can beat anyone when the 3-point shots are falling, but it’s unclear whether this is a recipe for contention with the likes of Houston and Kansas in the Big 12.

Houston vs BYU Odds and Prediction: Expect Close, Low-Scoring Battle

If there’s one takeaway from the first few weeks of Big 12 action, it’s that no one in this league is immune to upsets, especially on the road. Houston, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor are all top-15 teams that already have two losses in conference play. That makes the underdogs tempting in nearly every matchup, especially when the underdog is a dangerous one like BYU at home.

Houston’s defense makes the Under a solid play every time they take the court (the Under is 13-5 in Houston games this year), and it’s once again tempting on Tuesday night.

Pick: Under (135 at time of publishing)
