Inter Miami Leagues Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Former FC Barcelona and Argentina national team coach Gerardo Martino recently took the helm at Inter Miami, shortly after Messi announced his MLS move. “Tata” Martino coached Messi at Barcelona during the 2013-14 season and then from 2014-16 with the national team, and he is endeared by Messi for leading his boyhood club in Argentina, Newell’s Old Boys, to a championship in 2013.

After Martino left the Argentina job, he moved to MLS to coach, coincidentally, Atlanta United during its first two seasons. He is beloved by Atlanta fans for leading the team to its 2018 MLS Cup title, with one of the stars of that team being current Miami forward Josef Martinez.
Martinez was traded to Inter Miami at the start of the year after a falling out with current Atlanta coach Gonzalo Pineda. Formerly coached by ex-Manchester United great Phil Neville, Miami plummeted to the bottom of the Eastern Conference and are in last place overall in MLS as the Messi and Martino era begins.
Roster
Messi isn’t the only former FC Barcelona star on the roster, as Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets also made his debut in the previous match. Martino mentioned he wants both playing together so “Busi” can give Messi some support and both could make their first starts against Atlanta.
As a Barça reunion builds in South Florida, Spanish left-back Jordi Alba also appears to be Miami-bound. He has not yet trained with the team, but he is registered in case the team moves on in the tournament. Josef Martinez and Leonardo Campana are two proven MLS goalscorers who will benefit from the arrival of all those players.
Miami counts on 2022 MLS All-Star and Canada national team defender Kamal Miller leading the back line with U.S. men’s national team and former Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin. Young American goalkeeper Drake Callender is the man between the sticks.
Injuries
Out: Gregore (Lisfranc), Franco Negri (ACL), Jean Mota (LCL), Corentin Jean (ACL), Nicolas Stefanelli (leg), Ian Fray (ACL)
Atlanta United Leagues Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Former Mexico national team midfielder Gonzalo Pineda is the head coach of Atlanta United. “Gonzo” knows MLS well after finishing his playing career with Seattle Sounders FC and transitioning to the sidelines as an assistant coach in 2017, helping the team to a 2019 MLS Cup title, until Atlanta hired him midway through the 2021 season.
After making the 2021 playoff, Atlanta missed the postseason last year. Young Argentine Thiago Almada was brought in on a reported $16 million transfer to be the star of the future and has grown into a more important role this season with more goals including several free kicks.
One of the big spenders in MLS, Atlanta boosted its squad with the addition of Greek forward Giorgos Giakoumakis, who has 10 goals on the year. ATL is in playoff position as the 7th-placed team in the Eastern Conference.
Roster
Atlanta counts on one of the most experienced goalkeepers in MLS in former U.S. national team player Brad Guzan. After starting his career in the U.S., Guzan played in England from 2008-17 and featured in over 100 matches for Premier League side Aston Villa.
The Five Stripes have played with three central defenders, with Mexican defender Juan Jose Sanchez Purata in the middle, but aren’t strangers to four at the back. That could very well be the case with U.S. national team defender Miles Robinson returning from international duty last month. Longtime MLS winger Brooks Lennon and upstart American talent Caleb Wiley feature out wide, with midfielders Santiago Sosa and Amar Sejdić providing support centrally.
Giakoumakis is the man up top, but Spanish forward Miguel Berry could also see minutes at the position. Almada will play just behind either of them as one of the key creators on the team.
Injuries
Out: Machop Chol (ankle)

Inter Miami vs. Atlanta United Prediction
Miami will win the group with a victory over Atlanta United, but that is not the only scenario that could help the team advance. If the match ends in a draw, Leagues Cup rules call for a penalty shootout with the winner taking two points and the loser only one.
A tie, or even losing on PKs, would help Miami advance as at least second in the group. Either way, Miami will want to catapult off that Messi moment in the first game, so expect to see some goals.
With Messi and Busquets potentially starting, Miami should look good from the start, unlike the other night against Cruz Azul. Jump on the Messi bandwagon in what should be a well-contested match.
If you want to bank on a set-piece goal, perhaps off a corner, take a look at the central defenders like Atlanta’s JuanJo Purata +850 and Miles Robinson +2800. For U.S. national team fans, Miami’s DeAndre Yedlin could warrant a look to score at +2200.
Here are a few bets that are worth considering:
- Inter Miami to win: +105 (PointsBet)
- Total Goals: Over 3.5 +155 (DraftKings)
- Anytime Scorer: Lionel Messi -140, Josef Martinez +125, Giorgos Giakoumakis +175, Leonardo Campana +210 (FanDuel)
- Lionel Messi shots on target: Over 2.5 +162 (Bet365)
