Manager Simone Inzaghi’s side are off to a strong start domestically after finishing third in ’22-23 while also reaching the Champions League final. Inter have dominated all three of their Serie A matches to date, winning them by a combined score of 8-0. They’ve had no trouble generating — or finishing — scoring chances. And more impressively, they’ve notched three shutouts on a combined xGA (expected goals allowed) of just 1.8 in three games.

Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 lineup was stingy throughout this team’s run to last year’s UCL final, which included a semifinal win over AC Milan (3-0 aggregate). Inter’s defense has also been outstanding so far this year, with center backs Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij, and Matteo Darmian holding up well in front of keeper Yann Sommer.

Over the summer, Inter lost several key pieces, including keeper Andre Onana, center back Milan Skriniar, midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, and striker Romelu Lukaku. They responded by acquiring forward Marcus Thuram from Bundesliga side Monchengladbach and center back Benjamin Pavard. Pavard, a late-summer signing, is yet to make his Inter debut, but Thuram has started up top alongside Lautaro Martinez and has been effective, with one goal and two assists.

Inter are one of the few teams in any league to have started the same XI in all three matches. One of the biggest questions for Saturday’s game is whether Inzaghi inserts Pavard into the lineup or sticks with the Bastoni-de Vrij-Darmian back line.

Inter has faced Milan four times in 2023 — twice in the Champions League, once in the Supercoppa, and once in Serie A — winning all four, with seven goals scored and 0 allowed.

With Pulisic (two goals) and veteran Olivier Giroud (four goals) leading a potent attack, Milan have enjoyed an impressive start to the season. Manager Stefano Pioli’s team opened the campaign with wins over Bologna and Torino.

In their toughest test to date, on the road against Roma on Sept. 1, Milan played their best game of the season, beating Jose Mourinho’s club, 2-1. A 92nd-minute goal by Roma prevented Milan from notching a 2-0 shutout, but they controlled the match from the start, with a ninth-minute goal via a Giroud PK and a Rafael Leão tally in the 48th, putting them in the driver’s seat for the rest of the match. Roma (0-1-2) are off to a rough start to the season, but a decisive victory at the home of a team that reached last year’s Europa League final shouldn’t be dismissed.

Inter, however, will easily be Milan’s toughest test of the season. Milan’s midfield struggled at times against Bologna in the opener but looked better against Torino and Roma. That group, which features Pulisic’s USMNT teammate Yunus Musah, faces a tough test on Saturday. Inter wingbacks Denzel Dumfries (one goal, one assist) and Federico Dimarco (two assists) both contribute to the attack, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and Nicolò Barella are all solid in the middle of the pitch. If Milan’s midfield of Rade Krunić, Tijjani Reijnders, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek can hold up, Milan have a great chance to pull the upset, even with Giroud’s status for Saturday uncertain.

Injuries

Giroud could be limited or absent due to an ankle injury he suffered on international duty with France last week. His possible absence would be a big blow to Milan’s attack. Milan are also still without midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who is recovering from knee surgery over the summer. Center back Fikayo Tomori will miss this match due to suspension.

Inter Milan vs. AC Milan Prediction: Inter Milan 2, AC Milan 2

This match feels too close to call. Given the rivalry between these teams, the fact it’s a home game for both sides and their current form, it’s hard to see either team losing right now. The biggest reason to question Inter is their easy early schedule, while Milan could struggle if they’re without both Timori and Giroud. Expect no shortage of offense, as both Milan keeper Mike Maignan and Inter’s Yann Sommer will be put to the test.
