Prior to the launch of Kentucky sports betting, one of the best ways to gamble in the Bluegrass State was through lottery games. These are easily accessible and can provide instant chances to win money in the form of a small prize or a jackpot.

Jackpots grow as people continue to put money into the game. Eventually, a winner will take home that jackpot when the numbers align.

Let’s take a look at some of the games offered by the Kentucky Lottery, how to play the games, and the most recent Kentucky lottery results.

Popular Kentucky Lottery Games

Kentucky Powerball

Powerball is the most popular large jackpot lottery game to play across the United States, with availability in 45 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. It is administered by the Multi-State Lottery Association with the drawing held at the Florida Lottery headquarters.

Each game costs $2 minimum to play. There’s an option to add $1 for a Power Play, which can increase winnings between two and five times the amount for lower prizes, or up to 10 times for the $100 prize if the jackpot is under $150 million.

To win the jackpot, a player must match the numbers of five white balls and the red Powerball. Winning the red Powerball alone or with any combination of white balls will win a prize. Drawings take place three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Cutoff to purchase a ticket is 10 p.m. ET with the drawing held an hour later.

Kentucky Mega Millions

Mega Millions is a very similar game to Powerball. In the past, both games were not allowed in the same jurisdictions, but that has not been the case since 2009. The only difference for location is Puerto Rico does not have Mega Millions, where everyone else that has Powerball also has Mega Millions. It is administered by the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Each game is $2 to play. To win the jackpot, you must match the five white balls drawn along with the gold Mega ball. You’ll get your money back if you win the gold ball. The gold ball with matching white balls will receive $4 or higher. Matching three white balls or more will also win a prize even without the gold ball.

Similar to the Power Play on Powerball, there’s a “Megaplier” for an extra $1. Winnings will be increased by two or five times the normal prize depending on what’s drawn that night. Drawings are twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Kentucky Fast Play

Fast Play is a collection of games to play for players to win instantly and include a rolling jackpot. The game is created and printed from a lottery terminal. All jackpots start at $10,000 and grow as the game is played.

Over a dozen games are available to play instantly. The cost to play each game will differ, and winnings will potentially be higher on more expensive games. Some game genres will change based on the time of year and season.

How the Kentucky Lottery Money is Broken Down

According to the Kentucky Lottery website, $6.8 billion has been raised for good causes across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In Fiscal Year 2023, 20 cents of every dollar goes to funding college scholarships and grants. This is the second-largest portion, with the most (70%) going to the winners.

5 cents of every dollar go to retailers that offer games to residents, including large stores and local businesses. Another 5 cents goes to administrative costs at the state lottery.
