NY’s Offense Nowhere to Be Found on Saturday
Saturday was the worst time for the Knicks to forget how to score the basketball. The 86 points are the fewest they’ve scored in a game since November 9, resulting in a 2-1 series deficit.
Jalen Brunson scored 20 points – his lowest output in these playoffs – after missing all of his three-point shots for the second time in the series. He nailed six of his 10 attempts in Game 2 after going 0-for-7 in Game 1, so maybe he can bounce back from downtown in Game 4.
RJ Barrett’s hot streak of 20-point games ended Saturday after he put up just 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the field. Barrett had a -32 plus-minus – by far the worst of any player in the game.
The Knicks got nothing from their centers, as Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein combined for just two points in 40 total minutes. Predictably, they lost the interior scoring battle 36-50, which cannot happen again in Game 4 if they wish to tie the series up.
Butler’s Scoring, Miami’s Defense Continue to Play Key Roles
If we told you that the Heat would have one of their worst shooting performances of the entire season and still manage to win by nearly 20 points, you’d question our basketball knowledge. But when your staple is defense and your head coach is Erik Spoelstra, it all makes sense.
Miami’s lockdown defense helped them grow a double-digit lead that they kept for almost three quarters. Butler led all scorers with 28 points. Bam Adebayo had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Lowry added 14 points off the bench as the Heat never trailed.
Miami was one play-in game away from being eliminated from playoff contention. Now they’re two games away from the conference finals.
As long as Butler continues to elevate his game from the regular season, undrafted players like Gabe Vincent and Max Strus continue to exceed expectations, and the team cracks down defensively, this team will find itself one step closer to advancing to the next round.
