The NBA on TNT tips-off in the Lone Star State tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 12, as the Dallas Mavericks host the Los Angeles Lakers. This should be a great way to kick off tonight’s NBA slate, and we are here to break down the Lakers vs. Mavericks odds, picks, & predictions.
Los Angeles won the first-ever NBA In-Season Tournament and is playing great basketball. While this would typically be a big let-down spot for the Lakers, Dallas comes limping into this matchup with a plethora of injuries, including star point guard Kyrie Irving.
Still, this should be a very exciting game to watch. To make things even better, we will break down the Lakers vs. Mavericks odds and give our best betting pick.

Los Angeles Lakers (15-9, 12-12 ATS)
As mentioned above, the Lakers are in-season tournament champions and have been playing like an actual NBA Finals competitor. They have won six of their last eight games and are 5-1 ATS in their last six.
Although LeBron James won the tournament MVP, a lot of credit needs to go to Anthony Davis, who had a monster game against the Pacers in the championship game. He put up 41 points and 20 rebounds with five blocks. While his scoring output is a little down this season, Davis is still one of the most dominating big in the league and may be in for a big night against an undersized and injured Mavericks team.
The Lakers are mostly healthy, with the expectation for Jalen Hood-Schifino and Gabe Vincent, who are both listed as OUT for tonight. While LeBron, Davis, and Jarred Vanderbilt are on the injury report, they are coming off two full days of rest, indicating they will play tonight.
It would be a big blow to the Lakers’ odds for this matchup if LeBron and Davis do not play. Luckily, the Mavericks are also missing some of their best players, and Los Angeles still has some solid contributors ready to go in D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura.
If they play, they will undoubtedly be the better team in this matchup, especially against a struggling Dallas defense. On the season, the Mavericks defense ranks 21st in scoring (116.5), 22nd in points in the paint (53), and 23rd in defensive rating.
While the Mavericks have one of the better offenses in the league, the injuries will slow down their offensive production, and Los Angeles is playing some of the best defense in the NBA. Over the last eight games, the Lakers rank fourth in defensive rating and have done a solid job defending the three-pointer, where Dallas gets most of its points.
Lakers Betting Trends
- Los Angeles is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games against Dallas.
- The total has gone OVER in four of Los Angeles’ last five road games.
- Los Angeles is 1-5 ATS in its last six games in Dallas.
Dallas Mavericks (14-8, 12-10 ATS)
The Dallas Mavericks have won three straight games, but the injuries are really starting to become a problem. They will be without Irving, and Grant Williams, Josh Green, and Maxi Kleber are all listed as OUT for tonight.
Despite the injuries, the Mavs were able to steal a game shorthanded last night against Memphis, and they were also without Tim Hardaway Jr. and Derrick Jones for that game, both of which are listed as day-to-day.
With the crazy number of injuries, this could be a long night for Dallas as they are playing a well-rested Lakers squad. Luckily, they still have Luka Doncic, who is putting up arguably his best season yet. Through 21 games, Doncic has averaged 32 points, 8.5 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game on 48.5% shooting from the field and a career-best 38.8% from deep.
The injuries have forced Doncic to be even more of a focal point on offense. Over his last five games, Doncic has averaged 36.8 points per game, and he is shooting 25 shots per night.
Dallas’ defense may be an issue if the Lakers are at full strength. The Mavericks have almost no paint presence, and Los Angeles is one of the top teams at scoring down low. The injuries do not help the defensive depth, and some of the guys who are banged up are critical to their offensive success.
Dallas shoots the most three-pointers per game in the league, and Irving, Green, and Kleber are three of the better three-point shooters on the team.
Mavericks Betting Trends
- Dallas is 4-2 ATS in its last six games.
- The total has gone OVER in five of Dallas’s last six games.
- The total has gone UNDER in four of Dallas’ last five games against Los Angeles.
Lakers vs. Mavericks Prediction: Low Scoring Night in Dallas
The mounting injuries for Dallas will certainly hurt the Mavs’ chances of winning this game. Not only are they missing some of their more important offensive players, but they also are playing a well-rested Lakers team.
It also does not help that Los Angeles has one of the best defenses against three-point shots. They rank 10th in opponents’ three-point shooting percentage, and they play with a quick pace, which should put an undermanned Dallas lineup in trouble, especially if they can lock down Doncic.
That is easier said than done, but Doncic has been forced into more minutes with all the injuries. Although the Lakers’ offense is not all that great, they should be able to score just enough against a subpar Dallas defense to come away with a win.
Coming off a big win last night, I expect Dallas’s offense to struggle and the Lakers to take complete control of this matchup. If that happens, this game should go well under the total.
