As most people are looking ahead and trying to make predictions for the upcoming year, I would like to take a look back at some of the things that are missed by this geezer.

1. I really miss talking on a land line phone to friends and relatives during this time of year. Texting doesn’t do it for me.

2. No one writes letters anymore. I loved writing and receiving them when I was in the service. To this day I still have the letters my mom and dad wrote to each other when he was stationed in Egypt in WWII.

3. Wax, I really miss those old 45’s and 78’s on that record player and most of all going into a record store booth to play one before it was purchased for 25 cents.

4. Growing up back in Steubenville (Ohio) in the 50’s and 60’s I miss feeling safe. Our front door was always open and during the summer we only had a little hook on the screen door. My grandmother would always have a pot of coffee percolating. Our neighbors would simply walk in and sit down at the kitchen table and talk. Today I don’t even see my neighbors or know who they are. Sad.

I feel bad for this zombie-like generation, addicted not only to drugs but to cell phones that seem to be part of their bodies. The world has changed but this bettor and 60’s leftovers refuse to change with it!

Ok, enough said, let’s try to figure out who wants to be in these bowl games and pick some winners. It’s still a struggle but here we go.

SO. MISS +16.5 vs. Florida St. (49): Shreveport (La.) was not where the Seminoles thought they would be. They had aspirations of playing on New Year’s Day but that all changed when their QB went down for the count. We note Florida State went 0-7 ATS this year vs. winning teams. SO. MISS

Pinstripe Bowl
Yankee Stadium

BC +3 vs. Iowa (45.5): The Hawkeyes played one great game this year vs. the Buckeyes, who played the worst one in the Urban Meyer years. Iowa has gone 0-5 SU in their last five bowls. Also the last five favorites in the Pinstripe Bowl have gone 0-6 ATS. BOSTON COLLEGE

Texas Bowl, Houston

Missouri -3 vs. TEXAS (60.5): Texas has had some suspensions but we don’t think that will be a factor as head coach Herman has gone 9-1 ATS when getting points at Houston. Here at Texas, we think he will have them fired up. TEXAS

Foster Farms Bowl
Santa Clara, Calif.

PURDUE +3 vs. Arizona (65): Wow, the Boilermakers in a bowl game! They will be happy campers and we will make things simple: take Purdue here as Coach Rodriguez for Zona has gone 3-22 vs. the Big Ten. PURDUE

Thursday, Military Bowl Annapolis, Md.

Virginia +2 vs. NAVY (55): Just cannot bet against these military schools in bowls, especially after watching Army beat a good San Diego State team last week. NAVY

Camping World, Orlando

VA. TECH +4 vs. Oklahoma St. (63): Have liked VT all season and we will follow the money here as Okie State opened as a -6 point chalk. The wise guy money has hit hard on VT whose coach has gone 9-1 ATS with a rested team. VT

Alamo, San Antonio

STANFORD +3 vs. TCU (49): I did my basic training in San Antonio and have seen the Alamo, a must visit if you are ever there. One trend here is Big 12 Bowl teams have gone 2-12 ATS when favored by less than a touchdown. STANFORD

Holiday Bowl, San Diego

MICHIGAN STATE +1 vs. Washington St. (46.5): Again we will follow the wise guy money here on Michigan State. We also have much respect for head coach Dantonio in this spot. Sparty wins with defense. MICH. STATE

Friday, Dec. 29

Cotton, Arlington, Texas

USC +7.5 vs. OHIO STATE (64.5): As much as this bettor hates to lay this kind of number in a game like this we will make an exception. Look for a fired up Buckeyes team to make a statement. OHIO ST.

Saturday, Dec. 30

LOUISVILLE -6.5. Loved the way they finished the season. IOWA STATE +4, PENN ST. -2, MIAMI, FLA. +6.5.

Monday, Jan. 1, 2018

MICHIGAN -8, AUBURN -9.5. UCF is another team whose head coach jumped ship; Auburn will roll. LSU -3. Love the way LSU finished the season.

Rose Bowl
Pasadena (CA)

Georgia -1.5 vs. OKLAHOMA (60): Love the Sooners here, their offense is just the best. They will find a way to win this and play for the title. OKLAHOMA

Sugar Bowl
New Orleans

ALABAMA -3 vs. Clemson (47): My good friend and scout who resides in the Big Easy tells us the Tide faithful are already rolling in. Look for Saban and the Tide to get revenge from last year’s loss in this rubber game. BAMA
