The top seed in the NFC, Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers, meet the 3-seed Detroit Lions on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Fox. San Francisco is seeking its first trip back to the Super Bowl since it lost to the Chiefs following the 2019 season, while a win by Detroit would result in the Lions’ first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
The Niners went 12-5 and looked like the top team in the NFC, if not the entire league, for most of the season, but appeared vulnerable against the Packers in a game they trailed for most of the second half.
Detroit is coming off back-to-back home wins over the Rams and Buccaneers in the Wild Card and divisional rounds, respectively, after going 12-5 to win the NFC North.

Lions vs 49ers NFC Championship Analysis and Prediction
Green Bay showed last week that the Niners are beatable, especially if the weather is a factor. San Francisco QB Brock Purdy played well on the game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter but struggled in the rain for much of the night. Based on the forecast, wet conditions are unlikely in San Francisco on Sunday. Another issue for the favorites is the health of WR Deebo Samuel after a shoulder injury knocked him out of last Saturday’s game.
If Samuel, who is reportedly 50-50 to play on Sunday, misses this game or is limited, stopping San Francisco becomes much more manageable. With Samuel in the lineup and at least somewhat effective, though, San Francisco should have enough weapons to win this game at home.
That being said, the Lions have a legitimate shot to pull off the upset on the road. Detroit’s balanced offense is dangerous as long as QB Jared Goff has time to throw. Lions fans have to be encouraged by how well Detroit moved the ball last week, both on the ground and through the air.
Dan Campbell’s team has also shown that it can rush the passer, with DE Aidan Hutchinson entering this game on a tear as the leader of a pass rush that has produced six sacks in two playoff games. Hutchinson himself has gotten to the quarterback three times in the playoffs and eight times in his team’s last four games. If he and the Lions’ front seven can bottle up Christian McCaffrey and consistently pressure Purdy, this team has a real chance to stun San Francisco.
As dangerous as the Lions are, it’s hard to pick against McCaffrey and the loaded Niners. Let’s go with Detroit plus the points.
Pick: Lions +7 (at time of publishing)
