Football is here, but if you are a baseball fan as I am, these pennant races are just great. When these games get into the late innings it is like the last two minutes in an NFL or NBA game.

Anything can happen.

The key is those first five inning bets, especially when you are putting your hard earned cash on a top pitcher and you know he will only go 7 innings. Usually you even get a little better price on those first five inning bets. The last two innings in a baseball game can be brutal.

The first week of the football preseason started with the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday, which was marred by the death of Frank Gifford who was a great player and the last of the original voices of Monday Night Football.

We start with a string of games on Thursday going through Friday, Saturday and a good Sunday niter between the Colts and Eagles. We will look at some trends and hope to find a few winners.

There are certain NFL head coaches who have a pattern on preseason and we will hope some of those continue. Some coaches like to win games to get fan attention. Others don’t care and the teams with the best back up QB’s can’t help but win.

Keep an eye out for those top backup QB’s who want the work and exposure. Note the Steelers’ third tier QB who started the Hall of Fame Game and that will tell you all you need to know. The past 10 years the Steelers have gone 9-1 UNDER the total in Game 1 of preseason with no Big Ben or very little of him.

Pro Football – Thursday, Aug. 13

Saints +3 at Ravens: Many believe Baltimore will be back in the Super Bowl this year, especially Paul Truitt over at the Palace Station who grew up as a Ravens fan. He will be unloading on them in Game 1 on the money line against the Broncos in Denver, Tough call, Paul. In this game the Ravens have gone 7-1 in their last eight preseason openers. We will be with Paul on this one.

Jets +3 at Lions: This will not be a good spot for the Jets who have gone 0-6 in their last six preseason openers. We will lay the points with the Lions and hope they will be roaring.

Packers +3 at Patriots: A game this bettor really likes, not as much for the trend but the situation play. The Patriots will not be a group of happy campers with all this Brady crap going on. The Packers have gone 0-5 in their last five preseason openers, which has me heading to the betting windows and taking my shot. The Pats at home.

Pro Football – Friday, Aug. 14

Panthers +3 at Bills: Another situation play I am on. With the new-look Bills and mighty Rex Ryan taking over as coach, Buffalo fans want nothing but a win to start the preseason. Rex will be giving them one.

Rams PK at Raiders: The trend play is OVER the total as the Rams have played OVER in their last seven straight preseason openers.

Broncos +5.5 at Seahawks: Denver travels to Seattle to play its nemesis. The Broncos have gone 4-0 in their last four preseason openers and get the cash here.

Pro Football – Saturday, Aug. 15

Chiefs +2.5 at Cardinals: The Chiefs have gone 1-11 in their last 12 first preseason away games. Let’s hope they run it to 1-12.

Pro Football – Sunday, Aug. 16

Colts +4 at Eagles: Get to the sportsbook early as we have a 10 a.m. game. We get two trends in this matchup. First is the Eagles going 1-9 in their last 10 preseason openers. Second is they have gone 5-1 OVER the total in their last six Game 1’s.

Encore: If you are at one of the South Point, Caesars or Boyd group sportsbooks they will be having preseason parlay cards. We give them a big shout out along with the Arizona Charlie’s sportsbooks and Stratosphere, which will also have parlay cards for the first week of regular season college football.

This bettor will be out playing those 10 teamers as you just never know. Just ask Bob, you could be walking around lucky and not even know it. Have a great first week of football and don’t forget those first five inning bets.
