Three weeks after their Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 match-up ended in a 1-1 draw, Manchester City and RB Leipzig meet again on Tuesday at Etihad Stadium.

In our breakdown of the Manchester City vs. RB Leipzig odds, props, and predictions for the UCL Round of 16 Leg 2 battle, we examine why oddsmakers are giving the Bundesliga side little shot, despite their impressive second-half showing in Leg 1.

In the first meeting between these teams at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena on Feb. 22, City statistically dominated the first half but led just 1-0 at the break. After halftime, the teams looked evenly matched, and Leizpig got a well-deserved draw thanks to an equalizer in the 70th minute from Josko Gvardiol.

While Manchester City missed star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, RB Leipzig only had their top forward, Christopher Nkunku, on the pitch for 25 minutes.

Manchester City Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Guardiola’s team’s previous Champions League issues are well-documented, but that talking point isn’t going anywhere until they get over the hump.

In many ways, Leg 1 between City and Leipzig summed up the Premier League club’s issues in this competition: While it was clear from the first half what a talent advantage City had at almost every position, the scoreboard read 1-1 when the full-time whistle blew. Manchester City’s inability to put it all together on Champions League nights has been one of the stories of the tournament for years, and it’s once again front and center in the 2022-23 edition.

Roster

While Erling Haaland leads his team, and the Premier League, in goals, the most important player for City might be De Bruyne, who missed Leg 1 due to injury but should be on the pitch on Tuesday. If De Bruyne, who started in his team’s Premier League match against Newcastle on March 4 but played just 12 minutes as a sub against Crystal Palace on Saturday, is 100% healthy, he’d provide a massive boost.

In an interesting attempt to get De Bruyne locked in ahead of the RB Leipzig match, Guardiola said this week that the player needs to focus on the simple things to help his team succeed.

City’s latest example of their confounding habit of letting inferior competition hang around came on Saturday, when their clash with Crystal Palace was tied 0-0 until a PK in the 78th minute by Haaland made the difference in a 1-0 victory.

Injuries

City will have all their key players available, and defender Kyle Walker and De Bruyne will be rested after neither started against Crystal Palace.

RB Leipzig Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

RB Leipzig are in the mix for a first-place finish in the Bundesliga thanks to strong play this season from young stars Gvardiol (21) and Dominik Szoboszlai (22) as well as veterans Nkunku, Timo Werner and Andre Silva.

Without Nkunku, who is likely out due to a thigh injury, RB Leipzig will need big performances from former Chelsea forward Werner, Szoboszlai and/or Silva to have a chance in Manchester.

Injuries

A big reason why City are so heavily favored is the absence of Nkunku. Leipzig did, however, play well without him over the weekend, beating Bundesliga rival Monchengladbach 3-0 on Saturday.

While the absence of Nkunku (who has scored 12 goals in just 18 Bundesliga matches this season) hurts, Leipzig could welcome back Spanish winger Dani Olmo. He got his first action in over a month against Monchengladbach in a five-minute appearance.

Manchester City vs. RB Leipzig Prediction: Manchester City 2, RB Leipzig 1

Oddsmakers are not giving RB Leipzig nearly enough respect. Even without City’s track record of surprising Champions League stumbles, based only on how Leipzig looked in the second half of Leg 1, they would make sense as a much smaller underdog than they are (+500 to advance on DraftKings).

But while Leipzig are worth at least a flier at that price, it does make sense that City are favored, given they’re playing at home with De Bruyne and all their top players fit. I don’t think City will flame out against a third-place Bundesliga side missing its best player, but this will not be nearly as easy as oddsmakers seem to expect.

Here are a few bets available at DraftKings that are worth checking out:

  • Double Chance — RB Leipzig or Draw (+245)
  • Both Teams To Score — Yes (+100)
