Mets vs. Giants Betting Overview

Not only are the Mets winning a lot of games early in the season, but they are an impressive 12-8 ATS, and since they’re typically on the favorite side of the typical 1.5-point spread in baseball, they are putting up big numbers on offense. The pitching staff has been a bit of a mess with injuries to Justin Verlander and Edwin Diaz, and the recent 10-game suspension of Max Scherzer certainly did not help.
Meanwhile, the Giants are playing some awful baseball right now as they have the highest strikeout rate in baseball and are in the bottom half of runs scored. Although San Francisco has a team wRC+ of 103, indicating they are slightly above league average, it is home run or bust for the Giants right now, which is a scary thing if you are a San Francisco bettor.

Starting Pitchers
New York Mets: Joey Lucchesi
2023 Stats: N/A
For the first time since 2021, Joey Lucchesi will get the start for the New York Mets. After missing all of last season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, the Mets will turn to Lucchesi with a depleted rotation.
The last time we saw the 29-year-old, he was improving but ended his 2021 campaign with a 4.46 ERA in 38.1 IP. He has never had a season below a 4.00 ERA, and even though he looked solid in his rehab starts, this lineup can make you pay with the long ball. However, the Giants also have a high strikeout rate, and Lucchesi carries a career 9.30 K/9.
San Francisco Giants: Anthony DeSclafani
2023 Stats: 3 G, 19.0 IP, 1.42 ERA 15 K, 0.7 fWAR
It has been a solid start to the 2023 season for DeSclafani as he enters tonight with a 1.42 ERA and has not walked a batter in 19.0 IP. His strikeout rate is up, and he has also only allowed one home run on the season.
However, he is due for some regression as his xERA of 3.20 and xFIP of 2.72 are not great numbers when going up against a red-hot Mets lineup. Still, it has been a great start to the season for him, and the Giants have needed it with the offseason departures from the rotation.

Mets vs. Giants Prediction
We have two pitching staffs that have struggled so far this season and two offenses with high upside, but one also has an extremely low floor. That can make this difficult for us bettors, but luckily, one of these teams has constantly been above average the entire season, and they are getting plus value on the moneyline.
The Mets moneyline odds are set at +100 (EVEN), according to our friends at DraftKings Sportsbook, giving us some great value. While the pitching staff is a big concern, especially since tonight’s starter has not pitched at the big-league level in two years, the Mets’ offense has been one of the best in baseball to start the season, as they enter with a .342 OBP, .330 wOBA, and a 108 wRC+.
The Giants are not consistent enough on offense to take on this spot, and the fact that we are getting value on the Mets is an added bonus.
Pick: Mets ML (+100) via DraftKings Sportsbook
Mets vs. Giants Prop Bet
Pete Alonso Over 1.5 Total Bases (+115, DraftKings)
Alonso is enjoying a great start to the season, with an xwOBA of 4.6 and a wRC+ of 175. He has also increased his on-base numbers and batting average, showing that he has refined his approach at the plate, which is paying off in terms of getting on base.
His hot start is even more impressive because he is still scorching the ball, with a .649 SLG, and Alonso ranks in the 91st percentile of Barrel% and max exit velocity. He is taking more strikes, but the Polar Bear has cut down his swings outside the strike zone by 10%, and he is going up against a pitcher in DeSclanfani who is due for some regression.
Alonso has hit this prop in five of his last six games, and with San Francisco’s pitching woes, he should easily go over this number once again.
