Bowl season kicks off with eight games on Saturday. The first kickoff of the day is at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, and one of the most interesting matchups features the Appalachian State Mountaineers taking on the Miami (OH) RedHawks at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC and ESPN+.

The Mountaineers are coming off yet another strong season in the Sun Belt, which culminated with an appearance in the Sun Belt Championship. App (8-5, 6-3 Sun Belt) fell to Troy 49-23 in the Sun Belt Championship but enters the Cure Bowl as the favorite at 8-5 on the season.

Miami (11-2, 8-1 MAC) took home the MAC title with a 23-14 win over then-No. 23 Toledo in the conference championship game, but the RedHawks will not have QB Aveon Smith for the Cure Bowl. Instead, Miami will turn to third-string signal caller Henry Hesson after Smith, who started the last five games of the season, entered the transfer portal. Smith began the season as the backup to Brett Gabbert but stepped into the starting role following Gabbert’s season-ending leg injury in October.

Miami (Ohio) vs Appalachian State Analysis and Prediction

The biggest question for Miami is how well this offense can fare with an inexperienced quarterback running the offense. Hesson did not attempt a pass this season after making just two appearances, with five attempts, in 2022. Still, Miami’s defense is solid, and it enters the bowl game having held seven of its last 10 opponents, including each of the last five, to less than 20 points. App, on the other hand, boasts an impressive offense (34.8 points per game) led by QB Joey Aguilar, but its porous defense (28.4 points per game allowed) was a big reason this team lost five games. The Mountaineers allowed three opponents (North Carolina, Southern Miss, and Troy) to score 40 points or more.

Normally, a team down to its third-string QB would hardly scream, “tempting underdog.” Miami, though, has an intriguing case here because the QB change shouldn’t affect this run-heavy offense too much. Against an Appalachian State defense that allowed opponents to average 5 yards per carry, Miami’s rushing attack and stout defense should be able to keep this one close and low-scoring. The RedHawks just stifled a then-ranked Toledo team with a high-powered offense in the MAC Championship Game (Rockets QB Dequan Finn is now in the transfer portal and drawing interest from top Big 10 teams including Michigan), a good sign they can keep Aguilar and the ‘Neers in check on Saturday.
