Baseball’s best will be in Seattle on Tuesday night for the 2023 MLB All-Star Game, with American League players taking on their National League counterparts. The AL takes a nine-game winning streak into the contest, and MLB All-Star Game odds favor them, making it 10 in a row.

In last year’s game, the NL jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but couldn’t hold it and failed to score again. Will this year be any different? Can the National League break the American League’s stranglehold on the All-Star Game?

Let’s take a look at the odds for the Midsummer Classic.

It is hard to overlook the AL’s dominance in the Midsummer Classic. Even with a team stacked with talent, the National League squad will have its work cut out for it to keep the American League from making it 10 in a row.

But this is an All-Star Game, so the NL roster is just as rich in talent as the AL and includes eight players from the Atlanta Braves, the team with the best record in baseball at the break. Outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. has performed well against AL pitchers this season, hitting .326 with 11 home runs.

However, the AL will be without two of its biggest bats for the game, with Mike Trout and Aaron Judge out with injuries. Does that mean the door could be open for the NL to break the streak? That will depend on whether the NL’s hitters have any luck against a dominant AL pitching staff.

MLB All-Star Game Prediction

This season’s contest could be the year the NL breaks the AL’s hold on the All-Star Game. Why? Because NL teams have been playing better in inter-league matchups this season (217-193), and the offensive firepower on the roster will be hard to contain. It will not be easy to get hits against the AL pitchers, though, but the collection of hitters the National League has may be up to the task.

Of course, at the same time, bettors do not want to get too enamored with the collection of power hitters on the NL roster. The National League’s hitters could have a solid game, but the American League pitchers are many of the best in baseball.

Our Pick: Under 7.5

Best MLB All-Star Game Props

First Player to Get a Hit: Ronald Acuna Jr. (+230, BetMGM)

He is one of the most dynamic players in the game today and certainly one of its best hitters. The last time he faced AL starting pitcher Gerrit Cole was during the 2020 season. In two at-bats he recorded a home run and a walk.

  • Ronald Acuna Jr. to Record a Hit: -165 (FanDuel)

First Player to Get a Home Run: Shohei Ohtani (+950, FanDuel)

If you are going to bet on anyone to hit the game’s first home run, there isn’t a better choice than the current home run leader.

  • Shohei Ohtani to hit a home run: +560 (FanDuel)

Winning Margin National League by Exactly 1 Run (+525, Caesars) or Winning Margin American League by Exactly 1 Run (+370, Caesars)

The AL has dominated the All-Star Game for the last quarter century (21-3-1). While there is good reason to think this could be the NL’s year, the AL has proven it has a knack for winning this game. If the National League is going to break the American League’s hold on the All-Star Game, it will likely be a close game. But if the AL wins again, bettors should also expect the margin of victory to be slim.

MLB All-Star Game MVP Odds

The following list contains the top ten players listed on the FanDuel All-Star Game MVP betting board:

  • Shohei Ohthani (AL) +850
  • Ronald Acuna Jr. (NL) +1000
  • Mookie Betts (NL) +1200
  • Corbin Carroll (NL) +1400
  • Pete Alonso (NL) +1800
  • Adolis Garcia (AL) +2100
  • Corey Seager (AL) +2300
  • Nolan Arenado (NL) +2300
  • Luis Robert +2300
  • Luis Arraez (AL) +2300

Recent MLB All-Star MVP history certainly favors hitters over pitchers. Eight of the last ten MVPs were position players that had either hit a home run (’22, ’21, and ’14-19) or recorded multiple extra-base hits (’14). Pitchers have won it just once in the last decade, Shane Bieber in 2019 (he struck out the side in the one inning he pitched).

So, home run hitters are the best candidates, but home run hitters do not always win. Miguel Cabrera went 1-3 with a two-run home run in the 2014 game, but Mike Trout won All-Star MVP instead (2-3 with 2 RBI, five total bases). In the 2019 game, Joey Gallo hit a home run in the seventh, giving the AL a 4-1 lead.

But maybe since Gallo only had the one at-bat and added to the lead, it was not considered MVP-worthy. Then again, his run was the deciding factor in a 4-3 game.

Our Pick: Any bet on this market is a long shot; the favorite, Shohei Ohthano, has an 11.11% chance. But if you bet on just one player, Ohthani is the best choice since he can contribute on the mound and at the plate.

Other players worth putting a few bucks on include Ronald Acuna Jr., JD Martinez, and Adolis Garcia.
