Gunnar Henderson

The Baltimore Orioles are in a tight race to win the AL East, and luckily, some of their best youngsters are playing excellent baseball right now, including Gunnar Henderson. In September, Henderson is slashing .293/.303/.613 with a .380 wOBA and a 146 wRC+. 

Henderson also has five home runs, a .320 ISO, and has increased his Barrel% to 13.3%. While he is striking out at a high clip, Henderson ranks in the league’s top half in BB% and Chase%. He is also ranked in the top 30% of the league in xwOBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, HardHit%, and Barrel%. 

Tonight, he has a matchup against Justin Verlander and an Astros bullpen, which has struggled over the last few weeks. Over the last 14 days, the Astros’ pen has a 1.70 HR/9 and a 10.4% Barrel%. Since his return to the Astros, Verlander has made eight starts and has a 3.86 ERA, and he has seen a slight uptick in his strikeout rate. 

However, Verlander is giving up more hard contact than ever this season, and those numbers have only gone up since being traded back to Houston. The good swing-and-miss stuff from Verlander will be challenging, but Henderson has crushed right-handed pitching this season and should be in an excellent spot to hit another one out tonight. 

Julio Rodriguez

There is no hotter player in baseball than Julio Rodriguez right now. Since August, Rodriguez has a slash of .375/.412/.688 with a .456 wOBA and a 201 wRC+. While those numbers have taken a slight dip this month, he still is crushing the ball, as he has 13 home runs in his last 39 games. 

This season started slowly for Rodriguez and the Mariners, but they now find themselves in a good spot to clinch a playoff berth. For the season, Rodriguez slashes .287/.342/.500 with a 133 wRC+ and 30 home runs. 

Rodriguez also ranks in the top 25% of the league in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, HardHit%, and Barrel%. While his high strikeout rate and low walk numbers are concerning from a game-to-game standpoint, Rodriguez has been one of the best hitters in baseball since his debut last season. 

Although Seattle will be in Oakland tonight, which is not a great place to hit home runs, Rodriguez will face off against a lefty who gives up a ton of power in JP Sears. Through 29 starts, Sears has an 11.4% Barrel% and has given up 31 home runs in 157.2 IP. 

Sears actually does a solid job at limiting hard contact to right-handed hitters, but Rodriguez draws a lot of hard contact against lefties, and he is in a great position to hit another home run tonight.
