Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals
Over/Under: 8.5
First pitch: 10:15 a.m. PT
TV: MLB Network
Probable pitchers: Walker Buehler (1-0, 6.75 ERA) vs. Michael Wacha (0-0, 1.54 ERA)
Very curious to see the total at its current number, as you’d think this strong pitching matchup would command a lower line when the Dodgers and Cardinals wrap up their four-game set.
There’s Buehler, who the oddsmakers seemingly have forgotten can dominate any given fifth day. His 6.75 ERA is obviously skewed from giving up five runs in just three innings in his season debut, but Buehler bounced back nicely in his last start by limiting the Rockies to one run in five solid innings — at Coors Field.
Buehler will be in a big spot also, considering he’s trying to help the Dodgers dodge a sweep. Based on his terrific showing in the postseason last year (not to mention Game 163 for the division), including NLCS Game 7, it would appear the former first-round draft pick thrives in these situations. Thus, I think he can keep it going from his most recent outing.
Wacha, meanwhile, has been great since the onset of the campaign, pitching into the sixth inning in both his starts while allowing only one run in each assignment. His strikeouts have been up a bit, too, logging more than one K per inning, and that could be an indicator that the 27-year-old is back.
It’s understandable if you forgot but Wacha was actually having a really nice 2018 before going down via injury in June, so I don’t mind betting that his early-season results are indeed no fluke. The quality Cards bullpen can do the rest of the lifting.
