Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates
First pitch: 10:35 a.m. PT
Probable pitchers: Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Chris Archer (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
The first thing to realize about this under wager is that it would be wise to wait before placing your bet — like I’m doing. Based on the current juice, there’s a solid chance the number goes to 8, and with there being no chance it slips in the other direction, you may as well wait this one out.
It’s understandable that this series finale in Pittsburgh came out with its low opening line, as both starting pitchers have the potential for a shutdown outing this afternoon. Additionally, both lineups have had difficulty in the early going putting some runs on the board.
Archer has that ceiling any time he takes the hill, but perhaps even more so here. He’s coming off an excellent showing in the Pirates’ home opener when he blanked the Cardinals with five two-hit innings that also saw him strike out eight. This is a sign that Archer is finally settled in now with his new club after displaying some inconsistency a year ago.
Notably, the charismatic 30-year-old has never faced the Reds in his career, and I believe that unfamiliarity could work to give him a boost in proving a positive showing for his bet.
That is obviously not the case for DeSclafani, who has seen the Pirates numerous times during his tenure in Cincinnati. But there’s a lot to like regarding the sixth-year right-hander in trying to pinpoint his possible ascension.
Like Archer, DeSclafani was stellar in his 2019 debut, holding down a tough Brewers lineup to the tune of one run in five innings while striking out eight. This is someone that has displayed the ability of a breakout candidate before, and now that he’s healthy — not to mention following a strong spring — it looks like he can keep trending in the right direction.
As highlighted, I’m waiting first to see if the line reaches 8 before putting in my bet. Even if it does not, I’ll still be on this under. Play: LOSS UNDER 7.5/8
Yesterday’s Result: Twins-Phillies Under 8.5 (WIN)
