Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks
Over/Under: 10
First pitch: 5:10 p.m. PT
Probable pitchers: Yu Darvish (1-3, 5.96 ERA) vs. Zack Godley (1-1, 6.67 ERA)
There’s no question both starting pitchers in tonight’s middle affair between the Cubs and Diamondbacks haven’t started out their seasons as they planned it.
Darvish, after missing most of his first season with the Cubs a year ago, has continued to only show glimpses of the top-shelf pitcher he was with the Rangers and Dodgers. Godley has also been inconsistent in his first five starts, looking not much like the pitcher that racked up 15 wins in 2018.
But that all only presents us with an interesting buy-low opportunity here involving two starters that should get it going sooner than later.
Darvish has certainly shown that potential; he’s allowed three runs or fewer in all but one of his outings. The problem is he hasn’t made it out of the sixth inning yet, but it’s absolutely only a matter of time before the Japanese import begins to regularly go deeper into games again. His stuff still looks good and he’s maintained a healthy strikeout rate (9.93 K/9), something that’s always been a main factor throughout his previous success.
The eighth-year right-hander is capable of churning out some really strong work this evening and could end up leading the way. If that’s the case, let’s hope Godley, who has generally been steadier at home since his emergence a couple of years ago, can just hang in there and help guide the contest under its high total. Play: UNDER 10 (-105)
Yesterday’s Result: Yankees-Giants Under 6.5 (loss)
