San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
Over/Under: 8
First pitch: 7:10 p.m. Pacific
TV: ESPN
Probable Pitchers: Drew Pomeranz (2-6, 6.08 ERA) vs. Julio Urias (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
When he first debuted three years ago, Urias displayed a ton of promise that led many to believe the highly-touted youngster could be a force at the top of the Dodgers rotation for years to come.
Unfortunately, injuries thwarted the rise of Urias, as he’s been limited to only eight games (five starts) combined the past two seasons. Finally, though, Urias is ready to re-emerge and that begins tonight in this tasty assignment opposite struggling San Francisco.
In their opening series at San Diego, the Giants struggled mightily, totaling a mere five runs across the four games. In the process, they hit .177 as a team and managed only one homer.
It’s not going to get any easier when facing Urias. The 22-year-old southpaw appears poised to re-emerge after a sensational spring that saw him hold hitters to a .098 batting average. He also amassed a 1.72 ERA and 15-3 K/BB ratio in his 15.2 innings of work.
Another left-hander will be working this series opener, with Pomeranz taking the hill as the opposing starter. The nine-year veteran is coming off a lost season with the Red Sox, but injuries could be attributed to that. A strong spring showing — just like his counterpart — that saw Pomeranz post a 2.81 ERA and 1.00 WHIP indicates he may be about to return to old form.
A shift back to the NL West certainly can help. In fact, before landing in Boston, Pomeranz was was an All-Star in San Diego. While this certainly isn’t an easy matchup, the 30-year-old has had success against the hitters he’ll be squaring off with tonight. All current Dodgers that have faced him before — David Freese, Justin Turner, Kike Hernandez, Russell Martin, Corey Seager and Chris Taylor — are a combined 3-for-42 (.071). Play: WIN UNDER 8 (-120)
