San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants
Over/Under: 7.5
First pitch: 7:15 p.m. ET
Probable pitchers: Dinelson Lamet (2-2, 4.30 ERA) vs. Madison Bumgarner (8-8, 3.71 ERA)

Time is running out for both these National League West division residents to make some sort of postseason push, with the Giants seven games back of the second Wild Card spot while the Padres are 10 games out.

At least for the San Francisco side of the equation, we can surmise the current scenario brings about a sense of urgency, which can only be positive in Bumgarner’s outlook. Anything that’s even close to a postseason atmosphere — as we can all recall — usually involves success for the former World Series MVP. It’s a downgraded version of the regular Padres lineup he’s about to take on, too.

And normally, Mad Bum has kept San Diego at bay. In 34 career starts (and one relief appearances) against the friars, Bumgarner is 12-10 alongside a cool 3.47 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He’s also racked up 222 K’s compared to 53 walks in those outings, spanning 223.1 innings pitched.

There’s also the fact that, as usual, Bumgarner has pitched considerably better at home, just like he’s done throughout his decorated career. This season, he’s crafted a 2.95 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and .215 batting average against at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park, easily besting the 4.68 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and .272 BAA he’s recorded on the road.

Interestingly, despite also being able to lean on a home venue that favors pitchers, Lamet has been superior outside of Petco Park this year in his return from Tommy John surgery. He has a 3.12 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and .214 BAA to his name when dealing on the road, while at home, Lamet sports a 5.85 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and .250 BAA.

No matter where he’s pitching, Lamet’s future — likely at the top of the Padres rotation — is very bright and tonight’s assignment figures to be a continuation of his upward trajectory. Play: UNDER 7.5 (-120)

Yesterday’s Result: Athletics-Royals Under 10.5 (loss)
