Boston Red Sox at San Diego Padres

Over/Under: 8.5

First pitch: 7:10 p.m. PT

Probable pitchers: Eduardo Rodriguez (14-5, 4.10 ERA) vs. Chris Paddack (7-6, 3.44 ERA)

As the season inches toward its final month, young starting pitchers who just got their feet wet in the majors this year may begin to see fewer starts in effort of limiting their innings on the campaign.

That means Paddack, who’s understandably closely being monitored, only has a select handful of starts left in what has been a very impressive rookie showing.

Though he wasn’t able to sustain the dominance from his incredible April, Paddack has still enjoyed a terrific freshman year, being 7-6 with a 3.44 ERA while accumulating 9.47 K/9 and holding opposing hitters to a .203 batting average — tied with Luis Castillo for lowest among National League starters. His 0.98 WHIP is second-lowest in the league.

As a bonus, Paddack is set to work in his place of preference this evening, that being pitcher-friendly Petco Park. He’s crafted together a 2.53 ERA and 0.77 WHIP (!) in nine home starts, easily besting the 4.23 ERA and 1.17 WHIP he’s posted on the road.

Rodriguez gets the honors for Boston in this series opener, and while the left-hander has seen the over go a whopping 18-8 in his starts, that isn’t close to indicative of the nice season he’s had.

With both Chris Sale and David Price out due to injury, Rodriguez has stepped up to take charge for the pitching staff. Since the All-Star break, the 26-year-old is 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA, and he’s held opponents to a .228 average within that span as well. I like him to keep it going in this role he’s attained. Play: UNDER 8.5 (-115)
