Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers

Over/Under: 11

First pitch: 5:05 p.m. PT

Probable pitchers: Chris Bassitt (10-5, 3.64 ERA) vs. Brock Burke (0-1, 3.52 ERA)

When thinking about the most underrated starting pitchers in the American League, Bassitt has to be near the top of the list.

The sixth-year right-hander has finally been able to work a full season in the big leagues, registering career highs in starts (24) and innings (136). It’s hard not to come away impressed with what he’s done, as Bassitt has more than doubled the amount total wins he had entering the season, producing his first double-digit winning campaign, being 10-5.

He’s certainly been one of the unsung heroes of an Athletics team that currently holds the AL’s top Wild Card spot (albeit barely). Bassitt’s 3.64 ERA is tops of any hurler that’s made more than 10 starts (not including suspended Zylbert Guy Frankie Montas). He also leads the pitching staff with 129 strikeouts.

Perhaps the main reason to back Bassitt in any assignment is that he’s been so steady. This may be one of the better times to do so seeing as how Bassitt is in a nice groove at the moment, having allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts. He was also solid in two meetings with the Rangers earlier this season, limiting them to three runs and striking out 12 across 10.2 total innings.

On the other hand, we must also lean on someone that’s more difficult to get a beat on in terms of steadiness. That would be the rookie southpaw Burke, who is about to make his fifth-career start.

The 23-year-old has actually been pretty good despite having to make half his starts in hitter-friendly Arlington. In fact, both outings at home saw Burke manufacture a quality start, and he also garnered another out of his pair of road dates.

There’s no doubt Oakland’s lineup is intimidating but with the over/under being as high as it, even a satisfactory showing from Burke while eating up the majority of innings may be enough. Play: UNDER 11 (-115)
