Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics
Over/Under: 9
First pitch: 7:07 p.m. PT
Probable pitchers: Andrew Cashner (6-2, 4.73 ERA) vs. Mike Fiers (6-3, 4.63 ERA)
Most people may not realize it but Fiers has actually been one of the best pitchers in the league since the calendar flipped to May.
His 4.73 ERA on the year doesn’t nearly match the tremendous work he’s delivered in his last nine starts — all of which saw Fiers yield three earned runs or fewer while pitching the A’s into at least the sixth inning. One of those outings was even his second career no-hitter.
The key in leaning on Fiers for another such output tonight is that he’ll be working from the pitcher-friendly Oakland Coliseum, where he’s notably been better compared to on the road. In fact, his home ERA (3.60) is more than two runs lower than it is away from Oakland (5.62).
This is no coincidence, as Fiers was 3-0 in six home starts with a 2.91 ERA and 0.88 WHIP after being dealt to the Athletics before the trade deadline last season. It can only help that he has a not-so-intimidating lineup to tangle with.
A fellow veteran right-hander, Cashner, will serve as the counterpart in this one. While his name might induce groans for at least some, this is a guy that’s actually been one of the few bright spots on a last-place club, providing mostly steady pitching for a rotation that desperately needs it.
When taking an under involving the Orioles, you definitely prefer their starter being someone who can consistently eat up innings to avoid the bullpen for as long as possible. Well, Cashner can definitely help in that area, having recorded at least five innings in all but two of his 13 starts. He’s also allowed more than three runs in a start only four times, so anything within his norm would be useful for a total this high.
Try to grab this action as soon as you can, with the juice indicating the over/under won’t last at its current placement leading up to first pitch. Play: UNDER 9 (-120)
