Cincinnati Reds at Miami Marlins

Over/Under: 8.5

First pitch: 4:10 p.m. PT

Probable pitchers: Anthony DeSclafani (8-7, 4.27 ERA) vs. Sandy Alcantara (4-11, 4.15 ERA)

Lengthy injuries can often make people forget about how effective a pitcher once was. One such example is DeSclafani.

While his numbers on the season are modest, this is a guy that has shown he can be an upper-rotation starter in the big leagues. Prior to missing all of 2017, DeSclafani put together a commendable 3.28 ERA in 20 starts the previous year.

His work this season has actually been comparable to that breakout campaign. DeSclafani’s batting average against is nearly the same (.260 compared to .259) and he’s also registering a career-best 9.16 K/9.

Having allowed just one run in each of his last two starts, DeSclafani looks like he’s trending up again. Add in the fact that this will be a matchup opposite the only other club he’s ever pitched for and the makings of another solid outing are in place. When DeSclafani returned to Miami as a visitor for the first time last year, he went into the sixth and notched one of his three career efforts with double-digit strikeouts (10).

And then we have Alcantara, who I’ve covered as much as anyone. The lone representative for the Marlins on the All-Star team was one of my top sleepers going into the season and lately, he’s been reminding everyone why he was selected for the Midsummer Classic.

After initially slumping out of the All-Star break, Alcantara has settled back into a groove, yielding seven earned runs total in his last four assignments — three of which clocking in as quality starts.

We’ll lean on Alcantara to at least somewhat keep it going, as just another quality start would do here. Just make sure you get this bet in as quick as possible, with the total already dropping in some places. Play: UNDER 8.5 (-115)
