Thursday’s MLB Over/Under Bet: Will Tigers Continue Perfect ‘Unders’ Start?
Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers
First pitch: 10:10 a.m. PT/1:10 p.m. ET
Probable pitchers: Jakob Junis (1-0, 4.76 ERA) vs. Spencer Turnbull (0-1, 5.40 ERA)
Despite their encouraging start, the Tigers have been going through an extended dry spell at the plate since getting their season underway. In fact, they’ve scored just 11 runs in their seven games total, even becoming the third team since 1900 to win four of its first seven games while scoring 12 or fewer runs, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
In the process, the under has gone 7-0. Will one more be tacked on in their home opener this afternoon?
I believe so. It’s only going to get more challenging for Detroit this afternoon to plate some runs, as they’ll be having to deal with a divisional nemesis who has had their number.
That would be Junis — a big ‘Zylbert Guy,’ by the way — who has had success against the Tigers. In five starts opposing them last season, the third-year right-hander went 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and .209 batting average against. He also limited them to two home runs, which is huge considering that’s Junis’ biggest bugaboo. The Tigers, as a team, have hit only two homers thus far this season.
He’ll be matched up with another promising righty, Turnbull, who will be looking to continue to establish himself on Detroit’s pitching staff. The 2014 second-round draft pick is in his current spot after Michael Fulmer went down with injury but put up a strong showcase in spring training (1.80 ERA, 15-2 K/BB ratio in 15 IP) that exhibited he’s ready for this. After a fine season debut in Toronto, in which he really only had one tough inning, I think he can keep it going.
