Joe Ryan Under Strikeouts
The Minnesota Twins are one game away from elimination, but they do have one of their top-performing pitchers getting the start in Joe Ryan. Although he finished the regular season with a 4.51 ERA, his xERA and xFIP point towards some significant positive regression.
He always has been one of the better strikeout pitchers in baseball, and this season was no different. In 161.2 IP, his K/9 is up to 10.97, and he is letting up less contact on pitches in the zone. However, his best strikeout stuff comes against left-handed hitters, and the Astros have a right-handed dominant lineup.
The only lefties Ryan will face are Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker, and Yordan Alvarez. While Brantley is not that scary at this point in his career, Tucker and Alvarez have been so important to this team, especially Alvarez, who has four home runs in just three games in the playoffs.
Minnesota has reached this point because of a surprisingly excellent pitching staff. But the Astros have been hot for a while now, and although this game is at Target Field, expect Houston to be swinging early as they try to knock Ryan out of the game and keep his strikeout total under the number.
Corbin Carroll Over Total Bases
Although Corbin Carroll cooled down significantly in the second half of the season, he is still one of the best hitters in the game, and he is proving that throughout his first career MLB postseason. In four games, all of which have been wins, Carroll is slashing .500/.632/1.000 with a .643 wOBA. He also has two home runs, a .500 ISO, and he is hitting the ball much harder in the playoffs.
He also is not striking out or whiffing as much, and his BB% is up to 26.3%. Obviously, these stats are based on a small sample size, but Carroll has been electric in his first playoff run, and he has the NL West-winning Los Angeles Dodgers on the ropes, as a win tonight would lock up an NLDS sweep for Arizona.
The Dodgers will have Lance Lynn on the mound, who started the season horribly with the White Sox but has been much more effective since being traded to the Dodgers. However, he still gives up a lot of hard contact, especially to left-handed hitters, who are slashing .290/.360/.549 with a .384 wOBA against Lynn this season.
Carroll has also smashed right-handed pitching, with 21 home runs, a .389 wOBA, and a 146 wRC+ in 413 ABs. Based on how Carroll is swinging the bat in the postseason, he should still be in an excellent spot to have a big night at the plate, especially against Lynn and a struggling Dodgers bullpen.
