MLB Strikeout Props (8/3/2023)

These are our top MLB strikeout prop bets for today’s slate.
Max Scherzer Under 7.5 Strikeouts (-122 at FanDuel)
There’s a new face on the mound in Texas. The Rangers acquired Max Scherzer from the Mets earlier in the week and the three-time Cy Young Winner makes his debut this afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. The Rangers hold a half-game lead in the AL West and hope the addition of Scherzer will lead to a postseason push.
It hasn’t been a great season for the 39-year-old Scherzer. Getting a midseason reset may help reinvigorate the pitcher, but he was as much a cause for the Mets’ woes this year as he was a victim. He posted a 4.35 ERA in July and although he’s still playing well, 7.5 strikeouts is a lot for him to hit today. There’s value in betting the Under on his strikeout prop today.
Scherzer had a solid end to his June with a couple of quality performances but he hasn’t eclipsed 7.5 strikeouts in his last four starts. Getting dealt to Texas may give the vet the extra bit he needs to play at an elite level. Either way, 7.5 strikeouts is too high. One of our best MLB strikeout props for today, we’re going with the Under.
Jack Flaherty Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-117 at BetRivers)
Scherzer wasn’t the only pitcher dealt at the deadline. Keeping with the theme of “new pitcher in a new place,” we’re taking a look at the strikeout prop bets for the O’s new ace, Jack Flaherty. Baltimore is one of the league’s most surprising stories this year and preparing for a postseason push made the trade for Flaherty with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals were sellers at the deadline this year despite entering the season with high expectations. Flaherty has had an up-and-down season but finished out the month of July with a 3.03 ERA in five starts. He’s been particularly strong against right-handed batters of late and faces a Toronto lineup with a 21.7 K% against righties.
This is a good spot for Flaherty to make his Baltimore debut. Bet the Over on his strikeout prop bet for today’s game.
Shohei Ohtani Over 7.5 Strikeouts (-155 at BetMGM Sportsbook)
The first two pitchers we covered for our MLB strikeout props were both involved in trade deadline moves. As for the Angels two-way star, there was no shortage of rumors regarding his future. Ultimately, Ohtani will remain an Angel (for at least this season) and he gets a favorable matchup today against the Seattle Mariners.
Ohtani has posted a 3.43 ERA this season and has thrown at least eight strikeouts in both of his last two starts. Against Seattle earlier in the year, Ohtani threw eight Ks in the Angels’ 4-3 win. Seattle has the second-worst strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers this year.
Facing an underwhelming Mariners’ lineup, the Angels star should manage to put up another quality performance on the mound today. One of our favorite MLB prop bets of the day, we’re rolling with Over 7.5 strikeouts for Shotime.
