MLB Strikeout Props (6/27/23)
From Framber Valdez to Clayton Kershaw and Shohei Ohtani, the best-of-the-best are up for wagering consideration tonight. Keep reading for our predictions.
Clayton Kershaw Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+110 on Caesars)
Kershaw is quietly putting together yet another dominant season. He is 9-4 on the year, has a 2.72 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and has tossed 103 strikeouts, tied for 15th best in the league. Through four games in June, he has tossed 28 Ks, including back-to-back nine-strikeout performances against the Yankees and Reds. For the season, Kershaw has a 67.6% strikeout percentage, which is sixth best in the league.

That all bodes well against the Colorado Rockies lineup, which is sixth in MLB in total strikeouts with 731. The Rockies have several hitters with strikeout percentages above .300 who get consistent action. Although they have a solid team batting average, they have struggled lately, and Kershaw isn’t the pitcher they’ll likely find their rhythm against.
In the Rockies’ last two games, which includes a 25-1 thrashing from the Angels, they surrendered 25 total strikeouts and at least seven to the starting pitcher in each contest. This option has a lot of value, given the current trajectory of the Rockies offense, which is why we recommend betting the Over on Kershaw Ks on Tuesday night.
Shohei Ohtani Over 7.5 Strikeouts (-140 on BetMGM)
Ohtani’s ERA could be better, but he is near the top of the pack in every other critical pitching category. His 1.04 WHIP is in the top 10, and his 117 strikeouts are top-four in MLB. His strikeout performances in June have been average for all but one game, but that was his most recent outing, where he threw 12 strikeouts against the Dodgers in seven innings.
That’s a lot closer to the pitcher we saw in May. With a big performance under his belt, he may be preparing to turn the corner and put his June slump behind him. In the opening game of this series against the White Sox on Monday, Ohtani’s teammate Reid Detmers compiled 10 strikeouts in seven innings en route to a 2-1 victory for the Angels. With a script from his teammate on how to get it done against the White Sox, we like Ohtani’s chances of getting Over 7.5 strikeouts on Tuesday.
Additionally, although the White Sox are middle of the pack in strikeouts, they are near the bottom in team batting average. They also have a 33.5% chase percentage. That’s five percentage points above the league average. Ohtani should be able to generate a few easy strikeouts due to the White Sox’s lack of discipline at the plate.
Bryce Elder Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+115 on BetMGM)
The young Braves pitcher keeps getting better and better, so much so that he is starting to draw All-Star talk from his teammates. He has a 5-1 record, 2.40 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and 75 Ks on the season. His strikeout numbers don’t blow you away, but he has proven he can pile them up against struggling and quality lineups as of late.
In two of his last four starts, he has had an eight and six strike-out outing against the Mets and Phillies, respectively. The Mets are one of the best at avoiding strikeouts, accumulating just 615 to this point of the season. The Phillies, on the other hand, are top 10 in the league in strikeouts, accumulating 705 to this point of the season.
Next up for Elder and the Braves are the Minnesota Twins, who lead the MLB in total strikeouts with 819. In 12 of their last 20 games, the Twins have reached double-digit strikeouts. In four of those 20 games, they struck out nine times. If there is a time to bet Over on Elder’s strikeout prop, it is when he faces the Twins.
