MLB Strikeout Props (8/7/23)

Here are our best MLB strikeout props for Monday.

Seth Lugo Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-138 on FanDuel)

Seth Lugo has registered at least five strikeouts in all but three of his 16 starts for the Padres this year. In every trip to the mound in July, he tossed at least five Ks, leading to his highest strikeout total for any month this season with 35. He also went at least six innings in four of his five starts last month, which bodes well for his chance of getting Over this total.

Lugo is up against the Dodgers tonight, who are a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to avoiding strikeouts, surrendering 955 this season (17th in the league). They are struggling in the strikeout category in their current series with the Padres. In back-to-back games, they have struck out 10 and 13 times. In combination with the Dodgers’ recent high strikeout totals, we’re leaning defense on this line, due to Lugo’s go-to pitches drawing strikeout percentages above league average.

He uses the four-seamer and curveball at 33% clips this season, both of which generate strikes of at least five percentage points above league average. That will serve him well Monday, considering six of the Dodgers’ 13 batters with more than 150 plate appearances hit the curveball well below .250, and six of them hit the four-seamer well below .250.

Ranger Suarez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+110 on BetMGM)

Monday will be Ranger Suarez’s third time facing the Nationals this season. In his most recent contest against the Nationals, he tossed five Ks through 5.1 innings, and back on June 4, he went seven innings but registered only three strikeouts. Although Suarez allowed more runs the second time around, it was one bad inning that got him knocked out of the game. A single and two walks led to a Stone Garret grand slam in the third inning that put the Nationals up, and they never looked back.

Over on the Phillies' Ranger Suarez is one of our three MLB props picks for Monday, Aug. 7, 2023.

Suarez controlled the bulk of the game in that outing except for that inning. With four high-to-mid use pitches in his repertoire, including a curveball that draws a chase percentage 10 percentage points above league average, he should be able to cover this betting line tonight.

We like the plus-money on this bet. At +110, taking a crafty, veteran pitcher to get five strikeouts is a high-reward wager option.

Joey Wentz Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-115 on Caesars)

Joey Wentz made his return to the mound for the Tigers in late July after missing about a month with neck and shoulder issues. In his first game back, he pitched 76 pitches, registered six strikeouts, and didn’t allow a single earned run en route to a victory over the Miami Marlins. The rest seemed to have rejuvenated the arm of the Tigers’ second-year pitcher, which will go a long way in helping him reach his total tonight against the worst strikeout team in the league in the Minnesota Twins.

Wentz has faced 11 of the Twins’ batters for a total of 44 plate appearances. In those battles, he is allowing a slash line of .159, .260, and .318. He also struck them out 10 times in those appearances.

The secret weapon in this matchup is Wentz’ changeup. He uses it 17% of the time and draws a 55% strikeout percentage with it. The Twins have 13 batters with at least 150 plate appearances, and 10 of them hit the changeup at a clip well below .250. Look for him to go Over his listed total for the night.
