This week I went for breakfast with my wife and goddaughter. When going out for breakfast this city is full of choices, especially with all the breakfast-and-lunch-only restaurants. We went to Mr. Mama’s located at 5693 S. Jones Blvd. I love to go to smaller mom-and-pop-type places as it just seems they really go out of their way to make you feel at home.

From the minute we walked in the door at Mr. Mama’s we were greeted with friendly smiles and greetings of welcome to Mr. Mama’s. One of the gentlemen immediately asked if we needed a highchair for my goddaughter. Once he went for the highchair our waitress was over to get our drinks right away. I had a good feeling about the place already.

My wife loves biscuits and gravy and ordered it with scrambled eggs. The waitress told her they make their gravy a little different as they put sausage, bacon and a touch of maple syrup in it. My wife Lori loved it and actually said it was one of the best gravies she’s had with biscuits and gravy. That’s a bold statement considering she orders biscuits and gravy over half of the time we go out for breakfast. So for her to say it was one of the best considering how many times she’s had that dish at various breakfast places it’s a bold statement.

I went with a Denver Omelet and it was great – the eggs were done perfect, not too dry like I end up with too often when I order an omelet out. I had home fries for my potato choice, which I enjoyed. They also offer hash browns if you prefer your potatoes that way. My goddaughter enjoyed Lori’s scrambled eggs and my home fries.

We both had ice tea to drink and I drink ice tea almost all the time. I’m picky about my tea, if I don’t like the tea I’ll switch to a soda if the tea is too strong or tastes old. Mr. Mama’s tea was perfect. I had several glasses and the waitress even asked me if I wanted a to-go glass to take with me. Again, just part of how nice everyone was at Mr. Mama’s. Our waitress Jackie was so nice and every time she came by the table she stopped and fussed with our goddaughter. Its little things like that, that makes you really feel at home, and more importantly want to come back.

The food at Mr. Mama’s was excellent, the prices were very reasonable and the service was outstanding. The owner walks around and stops at the tables to ask how everything is, which again is that welcome feeling you get when going to a mom and pop place. I give Mr. Mama’s 3.75 Forks.
