We now get to the national championship of college football with the Alabama Crimson Tide again in the final game versus the Georgia Bulldogs. I am happy for Georgia and sick of seeing Alabama. This bettor wishes they would play a tougher schedule, then we may not see them every year.

Georgia looked overmatched versus Oklahoma in the early going but, in one of the greatest Rose Bowls, they kept battling on to win in overtime in a game for the ages. What this win took out of them is the question that will be answered next Monday when they meet a very tough Tide defense.

The Bulldog defense will be much better versus the Alabama anemic offense in what looks on paper to be a game similar to the Sugar Bowl. As this bettor just got finished ripping up my ticket on +3.5 on Clemson and adding it to my stack, it kept my perfect record of 0-7 betting against Alabama. I will try and make it 1-for-8 heading to the windows soon to take the +4.5 with Georgia.

This is the game Nick Chubb and Sony Michel opted for instead of the NFL draft last year as the “Dawgs” look to win their first national championship since 1980. You can take this to the bank: “slick” Nick Saban will not outcoach Kirby Smart, Nick’s former defensive coordinator. We also note that after the Bama win versus Clemson that just made them a money losing 2-6 ATS versus bowl teams this year, we will be in a taking mood on Monday.

We’re hoping the “dawgs” will be barking big time.

I am sure all my readers have noticed this writer has been ignoring the NFL this year. Well, I do have my reasons but will delve into a few things since we are in playoff mood now.

Back when the NFL was at its best my friends back in Steubenville (Ohio) – Craig Stern, “Last Race” Lenny Shaw, and me had the good fortune to see the then great Pittsburgh Steelers at home versus the then Houston Oilers with their standout running back Earl Campbell.

We were lucky enough to be sitting in a warm box on a day when the temp was around 15 degrees; but just in case Craig had a bottle of Remi Martin stashed for us if we got cold.

The players came out on the field and Craig, with his binoculars, saw Jack Lambert in a short sleeve shirt just going nuts out there. Campbell and his Oilers came onto the field with the biggest parkas you have even seen looking like Eskimos.

Craig looks at me and Lenny and takes off running. When he gets back we said did you have a bathroom call. He says, “Are you nuts, I had to get to the pay phone and call Hambone,” who was our bookie in Weirton, West Virginia, right across the river from Steubenville and just 30 miles from Pittsburgh.

The Steelers crushed the Oilers that day and, yes, Craig did let us have a piece of his wager.

The money we won was spent playing the ponies at then Waterford Park.

Next week we will take a little look at one of the greatest NFL playoff games as far as this one big NFL fan can remember.

With the college football season down to only one game we will be zeroing in on college hoops. Check the web site out at The entire website will be free this week withthe GamingToday newspaper going out a day late due to New Year’s.

Santa Anita will be going again on Friday with an eight race card. We will try to find a winner so we can pick up some extra cash to put on Georgia.

Playing Santa Anita the best bet, not only at the Great Race Place but at any track, is taking a shot on the 50-cent pick five when it’s a 14% take out. The pools are huge along with the payoffs, even if you have a short price in the mix.

Trying to find a single is the key for small bettors who want to take a shot in these big pools. We think we have a solid single in Friday’s early pick five. They do offer two pick fives a day the first five and last five races. But only the first five is a 14% take out, the second pick five has a higher take out.

In the first pick five, Race 2, we will be singling No. 7 HOTTALABAMBA, no joke. This filly gets her second start. She ran a solid second first out going 5½ furlongs at Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meet. She gets six furlongs today and a great post, plus we love Van Dyke riding for Baffert. Bamba owns back-to-back big works and is ready to roll. We just want one Bamba to win and it’s this one.

Get out and play those pick fives. You could be walking around lucky and not even know it.

College pick: Georgia +4.5

Last week: 11-9
