The Premier League is back and Newcastle is one of the clubs dreaming of catapulting itself into the title picture early. As the Magpies kick off their season, we look at Newcastle vs. Aston Villa odds, props, and a prediction.
Newcastle had its best EPL season in 20 years by finishing fourth overall and now they look to maintain that position or rise even higher. Starting with three points would be a great start as they have the added difficulty of playing in the UEFA Champions League this year.
Aston Villa is also coming off its best season over a long stretch, 13 years in their case, with a seventh-place finish. The Lions will also have European competition by way of the UEFA Europa Conference League, so a point away would be a good start.

Newcastle United Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Newcastle is in a resurgence following its acquisition by the Saudia Arabia Public Investment Fund just under two years ago. A fourth-place finish earned its first UEFA Champions League participation in two decades.
Two months into the ownership change in 2021, Eddie Howe was appointed as the first team coach. Under the 45-year-old English manager, the Magpies have been a new threat in the league and have become harder to defeat at home in the iconic St James’ Park.
Across the major online sportsbooks, Newcastle are top six in futures odds to win the 2023/24 Premier League. A strong start to the season will certainly cut that price down, currently ranging from +1400 (Bet365) to +2000 (Caesars), but the test will come in how they manage several competitions when the Champions League schedule begins next month.
Roster
English forward Callum Wilson led the team last season with 18 Premier League goals. Young Swedish forward Alexander Isak began to find his best form at the end of the season and is one to keep an eye on improving this year.
Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron has been on an upwards trajectory since joining in 2019 from then-MLS Cup champions Atlanta United. Harvey Barnes is projected to be on the opposite side of the field as Newcastle looks to shift to a 3-4-3 formation with Almiron and Barnes as wingers and Isak as the preferred striker.
Barnes is one of a few notable transfers made this summer to bring in more competition. The biggest purchase was a reported $70 million buy of Italian defensive midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.
Injuries
Doubtful: Fabian Schar (hamstring), Javier Manquillo (groin)

Aston Villa Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Seven-time English champions Aston Villa last won the Premier League in the inaugural 1992–93 season. The team will participate for the first time in the UEFA Europa Conference League following its 7th-place finish last season.
The appointment of Spanish head coach Unai Emery in November of last year was a key change in the trajectory of the club. The 51-year-old manager has had success winning the Europa League with Sevilla and Villareal while also winning Ligue 1 and several domestic cups with Paris Saint-Germain.
Aston Villa is in the top ten in futures odds to win the 2023/24 Premier League with its price ranging from +6500 (FanDuel) to +15000 (Caesars) across the major sportsbooks. BetMGM has The Lions listed at +300 to finish in the top six.
Roster
Englishman Ollie Watkins was the leader in goals across all competitions and is slated to have another good year at the age of 27. Danny Ings and Jacob Ramsey chipped in six goals apiece with Brazilian Douglas Luiz adding another six and Jamaica winger Leon Bailey adding another four.
Ings is one of the departures as he moved to West Ham United. French winger Moussa Diaby was the big offseason signing, joining on a club-record £51.9m deal ($65.7 million) from Bayer Leverkusen, with Spanish defender Pau Torres, one of Emery’s former Villareal pupils, joining on a nearly $40 million fee.
Between the posts, Aston Villa counted on Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez, who was a key piece of his nation’s 2022 FIFA World Cup conquest. A wild card on the roster is former Liverpool, FC Barcelona, and Bayern Munich midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who the team could use some help from in the recent injury of Argentine winger Emiliano Buendía.
Injuries
Out: Emiliano Buendia (knee ligament injury)

Newcastle vs. Aston Villa Prediction
This should be a fun match to watch as a neutral but be ready to sweat if you have some action on it. The nature of it being the first match of the season makes it a bit of a toss-up, though Newcastle should have an edge for playing in front of their home supporters.
Villa perhaps has a bit of the coaching edge with the more experienced Emery. The Buendia injury is a big blow for the visitors, though both sides will be incorporating new signings into their lineups.
This may be one to look at the draw but we’ll give the benefit of the home field to the Magpies.
