The most compelling English soccer matchup of the weekend does not feature either Manchester City or Arsenal, whose Premier League title race got a lot more interesting this week after City won 3-1 to move into a tie for first place.

Instead, the highlight of EPL Matchday 24 takes place at St. James Park. Our breakdown of the Newcastle vs. Liverpool odds, props, and predictions shows that top US sportsbooks consider the pivotal clash in the top-four race a toss-up. Newcastle’s only loss of the season (every other EPL team has at least three losses) came against Liverpool at Anfield on Aug. 31.

Liverpool have endured a brutal January but got a boost on Monday with a desperately-needed win over Everton. That result, coupled with the likely return of star center back Virgil van Dijk to the lineup — as well as the fact the Reds can cut the gap on fourth-place Newcastle to six points with a win this weekend — make Liverpool dangerous.

Newcastle, while well ahead of preseason expectations and in great position to qualify for the 2023-24 Champions League, have won just one — and drawn four — of their last five matches. Still, they remain -120 to finish top-4 on DraftKings, while Liverpool are +250. Expect both teams’ top-four futures to change significantly based on Saturday’s outcome.

Newcastle Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Newcastle have not won a Premier League match in January, but they’ve stayed afloat by battling for draws throughout a tough month. Newcastle got a 0-0 result against Arsenal on Jan. 3 followed by a win over Fulham on Jan. 15, then back-to-back-to-back draws against Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Bournemouth.

Roster

The stars of this Newcastle side include midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, former Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron, right back Kieran Trippier, and forwards Joelinton and Callum Wilson. The Magpies will be missing Guimaraes on Saturday, as the Liverpool match marks the third and final league match of his suspension for a straight red he was issued in a Carabao Cup match against Southampton on Jan. 31.

Injuries

Newcastle are missing not only Guimaraes but also fullback Matt Targett.

Liverpool Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Liverpool still have most of the players who have led the team to one trophy after another in recent years, but Manager Jurgen Klopp’s team has struggled this season due to injuries.

It hasn’t helped that several stars of the side that won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 (not to mention the success of last year’s team, which won the EFL Cup and FA Cup and reached the Champions League final) suddenly look like their best days are a distant memory.

The biggest issue for Liverpool has been the midfield, where injuries and tired legs have doomed a team that is 9-5-7 after losing a total of 11 EPL games out of 76 in ’20-21 and ’21-22. The recent absence of van Dijk, who hasn’t played since Jan. 2, has been another massive blow. Liverpool have not been nearly the same without him, especially in their 3-0 losses to both Brighton (Jan. 14) and Wolves (Feb. 4).

Roster

Liverpool still boast a ton of talent, from Mo Salah leading the attack to Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the back line and Brazilian star Alisson at keeper.

Injuries

While van Dijk’s return will provide a boost, Liverpool are still missing several key pieces, including Ibrahima Konate, winger Luis Diaz, and midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Newcastle vs. Liverpool Prediction: Newcastle 1, Liverpool 1

Regardless of opponent and squad news, betting on Newcastle to draw right now makes a ton of sense given the team’s 10-11-1 record on the season. And when you consider the high stakes, plus the fact that both these teams are missing key pieces – and/or playing stars who will be less than 100% — a stalemate seems incredibly likely.

While it’s hard to see Liverpool losing their first game with van Dijk back in the mix (and Klopp and Co. are worth a long look at +170 on the money line), it’s equally difficult to imagine Newcastle losing at home against a team that has as many issues as Liverpool do right now.

Here are a few bets available at DraftKings that are worth checking out:

  • Draw (+250)
  • Both Teams To Score, No (+130)
