Liverpool’s trip to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle on Sunday looks like one of the best matches of the young 2023-24 Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are coming off a draw in their season opener against Chelsea, followed by a 3-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend. Newcastle dominated Aston Villa in one of the most impressive performances of August on Matchday 1, but lost 1-0 to Manchester City last weekend. Liverpool won both meetings between these teams in ’22-23

In Gaming Today’s breakdown of Newcastle vs. Liverpool predictions, odds, and props, we cover a pivotal early-season match-up between two of the EPL’s favorites to finish top-4.

Newcastle got their ’23-24 season off to a head-turning start by blowing out Villa in the opener. They lost 1-0 last weekend to Manchester City, but held their own statistically, keeping Pep Guardiola’s side well below their usual offensive output (City scored 94 goals in 38 games last season).

Last season, Newcastle finished in fourth place despite struggling after returning from the break for the World Cup. In nine games from Dec. 31, 2022 through March 4, 2022, Eddie Howe’s squad went 1-5-2, taking just eight of a possible 24 points. Still, they finished the campaign top-4 thanks to a stout back line that conceded just 33 goals in 38 matches – tied with City for the best mark in the league.

Newcastle added Sandro Tonali to their midfield this summer and also signed winger Harvey Elliott from Leicester City, but lost Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood.

Howe’s team has the talent to challenge every team in the league, but skeptics question whether there’s enough depth for Newcastle to balance a possible Champions League run with the demands of the EPL.

Injuries

Newcastle enter the Liverpool match without any injury issues.

Liverpool Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Liverpool look like one of the few teams besides Arsenal with a chance to possibly challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season. This squad has a major weakness in the defensive midfield after losing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this summer. But with a potent attack led by Mohamed Salah and several other dangerous pieces up top, including Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo, Klopp’s team will be dangerous, especially if it can avoid injuries, which proved costly in ’22-23.

The offseason additions of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister should provide a boost, and Liverpool defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Andy Robertson form an impressive back four when they’re fit and in form.

So far this season, Liverpool gutted out a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, then dominated Bournemouth on Matchday 2 after giving up an early goal. If someone can emerge at the No. 6 position, this could be one of the most complete teams in the league.

Injuries

Midfielder Thiago Alcantara is yet to play this season, but Klopp said this week that he is “really close but not there yet” in terms of his return.

Newcastle vs. Liverpool Prediction: Newcastle 2, Liverpool 1

Sunday’s match feels like a toss-up, with Newcastle favored largely due to their strong homefield advantage — they were an impressive 11-6-2 at St. James’ Park last year. If there’s one area where Newcastle have an advantage, it’s in the middle of the pitch, where the trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton could take advantage of Liverpool’s vulnerability with Mac Allister out of position as holding midfielder.

Expect a back-and-forth match between two teams that will press aggressively from the start, with Newcastle ultimately prevailing at home.
