Cincinnati Now Favored in AFC Championship Amid Mahomes Injury

Joe Burrow and the Bengals make their second straight visit to the AFC Championship stage when they take on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday.

Cincinnati went on the road to beat the Buffalo Bills handsomely in the Divisional Round. Meanwhile, the Chiefs defended home field against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. However, it cost them, as Mahomes suffered a nasty-looking ankle injury in the second half, was forced out of the game, and was noticeably hobbled when he returned to the field.

Most Ohio sportsbooks installed the Chiefs as short favorites over the Bengals in early wagering. However, after initial speculation that Mahomes’ injury would severely limit him, if not rule him out, for Sunday’s contest, the pendulum swung in favor of the visiting team. Kansas City (between -113 and -120 on the moneyline) is favored by just one point against Cincinnati (-107 and +100).

The betting public is not only keeping a close eye on the aforementioned injury, but they’re also afraid of it. About 69% moneyline tickets and 75% spread tickets at DraftKings Ohio are on the Bengals.

This AFC matchup checks off a lot of boxes. From high-flying offenses to star power to narrative, this should be one for the books.

AFC Championship QB Props: Joe Burrow

Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (-175, BetRivers) | Under 279.5 Passing Yards (-103, Caesars)

It’s a lot of juice to lay, but the numbers bear it out. Burrow has thrown for multiple scores in 12 of his 18 games on the season (regular season and postseason), which justifies the chalky line.

Kansas City gives up the most touchdowns through the air (1.9 per game) and gives up a touchdown on 67% of opponents’ red zone trips (second-highest rate in the NFL). Burrow has taken advantage of the Chiefs’ weak pass defense his whole career, throwing for two-plus touchdowns in all three meetings.

Listen, two things can be true. A quarterback can log multiple touchdowns without racking up a ton of yards. Burrow is no different.

The Cincy quarterback has totaled 280-plus yards passing in just seven of his 18 games this season. He also fell short of his AFC Championship line in both playoff appearances this year. Burrow can blow up for big yardage better than most, but his passing prop line is just too high.

Joe Burrow Anytime TD Scorer (+500, FanDuel)

This one is just for fun, though it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. As a runner, Burrow is more like Tom Brady than Lamar Jackson. However, like Brady, he’s good at sneaking it in for a touchdown here and there.

Burrow has scored in six of his 18 appearances this season. Not only that, arguably the best rushing outing of his career came against the Chiefs in Week 13, when he ran for 46 yards and one touchdown.

Make sure to grab Burrow’s TD scorer prop at FanDuel Ohio, as it offers the best price of any sportsbook in Ohio for this prop bet by a mile.

QB Prop: Patrick Mahomes

325+ Alternate Passing Yards (+235, FanDuel)

Mahomes doesn’t just hit the Over on his passing prop line – he often crushes it. He erupted for 325-plus yards passing in nine of his 17 regular season appearances this year.

The matchup shouldn’t scare bettors, either. Cincinnati gives up the ninth most passing yards (229.8 per game). We do understand that Mahomes hasn’t been that prolific against the Bengals in recent meetings, but given the stakes of the matchup and the prop’s rewarding price, we believe it’s worth taking a stab at his alternate passing line.

Besides, Mahomes is the most explosive thrower in the league. If anyone can hit this high of a line, it’s #15 on the Chiefs.
