Preseason football is the NFL’s version of store-bought cake. It doesn’t completely satisfy a fan’s craving, but it takes the edge off until the real deal is available. That won’t preclude bettors from placing wagers, though, and here we look at NFL preseason odds for Friday’s card of Week 1 matchups.

Falcons at Lions and Jets at Eagles are among Friday’s five NFL preseason games. Both affairs feature second-year head coaches expected to lead improved teams in 2022.

Bettors can wager on point spreads, totals, and moneylines on their platform(s) of choice. Preseason or not, though, bettors still need to shop for the best available odds.

Head coaches Arthur Smith (Falcons) and Dan Campbell (Lions) are aiming to play their starters for roughly a quarter of Friday’s matchup. Bettors won’t find many large spreads during the preseason. The Lions opened -3 before the odds shifted to pick ’em. The total climbed in response to the news as well.

Each team is entering its second season under a new regime. The continuity and familiarity with schemes and expectations should help players on both sides.

Neither the Lions nor the Falcons have loaded rosters, but there are a number of quality players on both sides. Atlanta tight end Kyle Pitts and rookie wide receiver Drake London present basketball player-sized targets for quarterback Marcus Mariota. Meanwhile, running back D’Andre Swift, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown form a promising core of skill players for Detroit.

The Jets and Eagles both anticipate playing starters 2-3 series, so bettors will get a long look at second and third stringers. The odds are tight across the top sportsbooks. Philadelphia opened as 1.5-point favorites before the line moved to pick ’em at some shops.

Head coaches Robert Saleh and Nick Sirianni are in Year 2 for the Jets and Eagles, respectively, so it’s safe to presume improved play from both sides. There’s reason for Jets and Eagles supporters to be optimistic this season, but fans and bettors shouldn’t expect fireworks Friday evening.

It’s not unreasonable to expect a jump from both the Jets and Eagles in 2022. The Eagles upgraded a quality roster with the acquisition of explosive and dynamic wide receiver A.J. Brown. He heads a group of talented skill players, including second-year wide receiver DeVonta Smith and ascending tight end Dallas Goedert.

The Jets, meanwhile, made a concerted effort to support second-year quarterback Zach Wilson by improving his protection and adding weapons. Bettors get their first look at wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall, who are penciled into prominent roles for their rookie seasons.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds & Quick Hits

  • Embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson is slated to start the Browns’ preseason against the Jacksonville Jaguars along with most of their starters. Watson will miss the season’s first six games at minimum and faces a stiffer ban. Watson hasn’t played football since 2020, so the Browns want to get him game reps. Cleveland is a 1- to 1.5-point favorite, with a total of 37.5.
  • NFL analysts and pundits expect improvement from the Jaguars under head coach Doug Pederson. The 2021 season was an absolute disaster for the Jaguars, and Pederson is tasked with getting last season’s No. 1 overall pick, Trevor Lawrence, off and running in his sophomore season.
  • According to head coach Kliff Kingsbury, the Arizona Cardinals will start third-string quarterback Trace McSorely in Friday’s preseason opener. The Bengals, meanwhile, will be without quarterback Joe Burrow, who continues to recover from an appendectomy. Cincy is priced between -1.5 and -2, and the total is around 31.5.
  • Bettors should not expect to see starters when the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers square off. Jordan Love will start under center for the Packers. Meanwhile, the Niners play three preseason games in 12 days, so head coach Kyle Shanahan will factor that into his preseason playing time decisions. The Niners are -2.5, and the total is 33.5, per Thursday’s consensus numbers.
