The kickoff of the 2022 NFL season is just a few weeks away, and each team has just one more preseason game to shake off the rust before the scores start to count. A lot goes into making preseason week three predictions as most teams deploy different strategies for the final round of exhibition games. Here we offer our NFL Week 3 best bets.

Many of the league’s top teams will prioritize the health of their starters and opt to keep them on the bench instead of risking injuries. Other teams, particularly those with several inexperienced starters and new coaches or schemes, may keep the first-strings in longer as a dress rehearsal for the regular season.

What would be a marquee matchup if played in the regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. Kansas City finishes the preseason as a slight underdog at home before kicking off the regular season in Arizona.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs starters have looked like they are in mid-season form so far, and they’ve displayed solid depth in their previous outings. The Packers have kept most of their starters on the bench, and their backups have not impressed. As home underdogs, the Chiefs are one of the best bets of preseason Week 3.

Kansas City is fresh off a 24-14 victory over the Washington Commanders last week. Both the starting team and the backups looked good in the win, controlling the scoreboard throughout the contest. Mahomes has started three drives for the Chiefs this preseason and led them to the end zone each time. He’s been effective in spreading the ball around, squashing concerns that the departure of receiver Tyreek Hill would set back the star quarterback.

He completed 12 passes to seven different receivers against the Commanders. In his first taste of preseason action a week prior, he completed six passes to six different receivers. He will try to keep the Chiefs offense rolling for the home crowd this week.

Last year’s league MVP, Aaron Rodgers, isn’t expected to play in the preseason finale. Rodgers hasn’t played a preseason down since 2018 and has stated he doesn’t see the benefit in playing just one series. Head coach Matt LaFleur must agree, as he has stated he’ll rest most of the first-string players ahead of their season debut against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Packers opened up the preseason with a loss to the 49ers and then picked up a sloppy win over the New Orleans Saints last week. Jordan Love has taken most of the reps behind center this preseason, and the third-year quarterback has been inconsistent. He has three touchdown passes and three interceptions through two games and a 52% completion rate.

Packers at Chiefs Preseason Pick

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs should build an early lead that Jordan Love and the Packers backups should not be able to overcome. Getting points at home, the Chiefs are a great preseason Week 3 bet.

New York City’s two NFL teams finish off their preseason against one another at MetLife Stadium, an annual tradition known as the “Snoopy Bowl”, named after their stadium namesake’s mascot. The Jets are the current keepers of the trophy.

Although both teams finished last season near the bottom of the league in scoring, the Over in Jets and Giants games this preseason is a combined 4-0. That trend should continue when they face one another, making Over 38.5 one of the best bets of NFL Preseason Week 3.

The Jets enter this game 2-0 this preseason, scoring 24 points in both despite their offensive ineptitude of last year. The 2021 Jets defense was arguably the worst in the league, and through two preseason games, they have yet to show a noteworthy improvement. In their wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons, they have conceded an average of 18.5 points and 345 yards per game.

In his first preseason as the head coach of the Giants, Brian Daboll has his team 2-0 entering their preseason finale. Like their crosstown rivals, the Giants are averaging 24 points per game. They’ve conceded over 20 points in their victories over the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals.

Giants vs. Jets Preseason Pick

The Jets and Giants have managed to get on the scoreboard this preseason, all while giving up lots of points. This matchup carries a little more weight than the average preseason game, as both teams want to enter the regular season off a win over their stadium roommate. One of the NFL preseason week three best bets is over 38.5 in this matchup. A close game with both teams scoring in the 20-24 range will be enough to cash on the total.

Tom Brady has returned to Tampa Bay after his 11-day hiatus, but don’t expect him to see significant playing time when the Bucs close out their preseason in Indianapolis. Both teams are looking to get their first win, but the Colts are one of Week 3 best bets if this preseason. Indy should pull out the victory at home and cover the points.

Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles hasn’t completely ruled out Brady taking the field against Indy, but it’s doubtful he would play more than a series or two.

The Bucs have gone winless through two preseason games, with Kyle Trask taking most of the reps behind center. Injuries have plagued the Bucs offensive line, making it difficult for the offense to find any rhythm. Despite having over 50 dropbacks in two preseason games, Trask has thrown only one touchdown to two interceptions. The second-year quarterback has been the victim of six sacks this preseason and has fumbled three times (one lost).

Tampa doesn’t catch a break with the Colts, who have sacked opposing quarterbacks five times and tallied four interceptions. The Bucs were competitive in their first preseason game, a 26-24 loss to Miami, but they looked especially bad in last week’s 13-3 loss in Tennessee.

The Colts are also winless through their first two preseason games but looked competitive in both losses. They had a 24-10 lead halfway through the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills, and a failed two-point conversation with less than a minute left was the difference maker against the Detroit Lions. The Colts have tended to get off to slow starts in the regular season and have dropped eight-straight season openers.

Head coach Frank Reich has preached this preseason that he wants that to change and that he doesn’t want to replicate last year’s 0-3 start. Stumbling into the regular season without a preseason win does little to combat that narrative, and Reich knows his position is in jeopardy if his team doesn’t perform well. Quarterback Matt Ryan and most starters are expected to play the whole first half, giving them ample opportunity to build a lead before Sam Ehlinger – who has performed well in his own right – finishes the game.

Bucs vs. Colts Preseason Week 3 Pick

It’s more points than most people are comfortable laying for a preseason matchup, but the Colts laying 5.5 at home is one of the best bets for preseason week three.
