This NFL offseason has come with massive shifts around the league. Players who were once the faces of their franchise have moved on, starting fresh with new organizations. Teams that were once threatening have become the jokes of the league. With just eight weeks until the start of the season, sportsbooks are offering futures odds, including some season specials.

Odds on NFL teams to finish the 2022 season winless is among these betting markets, and while it may be a depressing wager, the quarterback-challenged Houston Texans have the shortest odds at +1600 on DraftKings to finish with an 0-17 record, implying a probability of about 5.88%, With the loss of Matt Ryan to the Colts, the Falcons are second in the running at +2000, giving Atlanta a 4.76% chance.

Betting Favorites to go Winless

Houston Texans +1600

A lot can happen in three years. For the Houston Texans, it’s going from being a contender in the AFC to possibly the worst team in the entire league.

Aside from trading away franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Browns, the Texans have been fairly quiet this offseason, which doesn’t help their case. The fate of the organization is in the hands of Davis Mills (66.8 completion percentage, 2,664 yards, 16 TDs, 10 INTs in 13 games last season) and nine draft picks.

Lovie Smith takes over as head coach this season, and while he has quite a bit of experience, coaching can only go so far when there isn’t talent to execute. Houston, we have a problem.

Atlanta Falcons +2000

Atlanta also traded away its quarterback this offseason, sending Matt Ryan to the Colts.

The Falcons have made it clear that they will be prioritizing their younger talent in this rebuild stage, drafting Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, while adding veteran QB Marcus Mariota. For the first time in 14 years, Atlanta does not know who will be starting under center Week 1.

New York Jets +3500

Aren’t the Jets on this list every year?

Robert Saleh enters year two as head coach after guiding the team to a 4-13 mark last season. But the Jets used the draft to acquire much-needed defensive help while using free agency to pick up some key role players like Jordan Whitehead, Laken Tomlinson, D.J. Reed, C.J. Uzomah, and Tyler Conklin.

Seattle Seahawks +4000

While the entirety of the Seahawks fanbase mourned the loss of Russell Wilson to the Broncos, the Seahawks franchise received quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris, and draft picks in return. Seattle heads into the season with Lock and Geno Smith as their quarterbacks.

Which Teams Have Gone Winless in NFL History?

Here are the teams that have recorded winless seasons dating back to 1944.

2017Cleveland Browns0-16
2008Detroit Lions0-16
1982Baltimore Colts0-8-1
1976Tampa Bay Buccaneers0-14

How to Read Winless Season Odds?

Before you place your bet on which team will record a winless season in 2022, here’s how to read the odds and what they mean.

Odds at US sportsbooks are typically expressed in the American format. For example, let’s take a look at the Detroit Lions offered at +6500 on DraftKings. A $100 wager on Detroit would net backers $6,500 profit plus their initial $100 bet, a $50 bet would net $3,250.

Odds translate into an implied winning percentage. ‘+6500’ (or 65-1) translates into a 1.52% chance of winning. If you believe the Lions have a greater than 1.52% chance to go 0-17, then it’s a good bet to make.

Check out our odds converter for help in translating one form of odds to another or to calculate implied win percentage.

How long is the NFL Season?

The season is 18 weeks long, as each team plays 17 games with a bye week on their schedule. The first game of the 2022 season will be played on September 8 and the last on January 2, 2023.

Has any team gone winless in NFL history?
