Showrooms are opening back up as entertainers return to the bright lights of Sin City. With visitors once again flocking to Las Vegas, I have received countless emails and direct messages on social media about which shows to see. You can never make a poor choice in the entertainment capital of the world.
But there is one name that seems to excite more guests than any other and shine a little brighter than most — David Copperfield.
As a columnist, I must remain impartial. However, this master magician who holds 11 Guinness World Records and I have history. As a young boy in the early 1980’s, my father was one of the highest-rated gamblers in Atlantic City. We were staying in a penthouse suite. I got into the elevator to go downstairs and meet my family for breakfast and was surprised that the car actually went up. The doors opened and in walked a very tall, dark-haired man in a long, black leather trench coat. Just the two of us riding down to the lobby when he initiated some small talk and asked if I was having fun in A.C.
I knew who he was and he was so nice, but I was embarrassed to ask for an autograph. The doors opened on the ground floor, he said to me, “Have a magical day,” and went on his way. Later that afternoon, a knock came to our hotel suite doors and a representative from the hotel/casino had VIP tickets to that evening’s show.

Copperfield somehow found out our names and what room we were in and invited us to see him. During the show, he made several comments to us and made us part of his amazing performance. Like anyone that sees him live, I was a fan for life. That is the “magic” of David Copperfield. He makes it as if he is performing just for you.
Known around the globe for grand illusions, such as when he “flew” across the Grand Canyon; on another, he appeared to walk through the Great Wall of China; and in his most famous stunt, he seemingly caused the Statue of Liberty to vanish from sight, Copperfield has taken the theater of magic to another level not experienced since the days of Harry Houdini.
The acclaimed performer has been wowing audiences on the Strip for decades and has sold more tickets than any other solo performer in history. His Las Vegas show has been one of the most popular in the city since its debut in 1996. He makes his home at the MGM Grand in the theater named after him.
“It takes at least two years to develop illusions and some of them take even longer,” Copperfield said. “I love to challenge my team and myself by pushing the envelope and working on new methods and ideas. I don’t always take the easiest route. Sometimes, the ultimate solution requires months of brainstorming, miniatures and mock-ups, and testing just to make an idea a reality.”
Copperfield is the one entertainer at any time of year, that other stars go see. Winner of 26 worldwide magic awards, Murray the Celebrity Magician, a.k.a, Murray Sawchuck said, ”Copperfield is the incomparable professional. Whatever he sets his mind to in magic, he achieves it, then triples how great the idea or effect becomes. He is the No. 1 living legend at this time.”
There are scheduled performances every Sunday thru Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., with a 4 p.m. matinee show added each Saturday thru Jan. 31. Copperfield and the MGM Resorts International want to keep everyone safe during the current health conditions. Masks are required and social distancing is practiced. In a theater that holds nearly 740 guests, they max out at 250 attendees. Tickets are priced at $81.69, $111.96 and $122.97 plus fees. All tickets are sold in groups of either twos or fours.
Whether you are visiting from Paris, Texas or Paris, France, this family-friendly show is the one you must see during your stay. The one sure way to believe in magic, is to see David Copperfield.
