As the calendar turns to late August it means it’s our favorite time of the year. Yes, college and NFL football will be taking up most of our weekends and Monday nights for the next several months.
Many of my food articles will be about great places around town to have a few colds ones, grab some food and most importantly watch football. This week we ventured into Rebel Republic located at 3540 West Sahara Avenue. For my beer-drinking friends, you are going to like the beer selection. During Happy Hour they have $4 Craft Beer Pints, $3 Domestic Pints and $2 PBR Pints from 2-6 p.m., weekdays and late night 1-5 a.m., daily.
There are some great food specials during Happy Hour as well, including $5 small plates consisting of Reuben Eggrolls, Southwestern Eggrolls, Wings, Kobe Sliders, BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders and Jalapeno Poppers.
If I’m going to be watching football you can bet I’ll be eating wings. I went with their Rebel Sauce, which as they describe it is sweet, sticky and mysteriously spicy. I liked it, as it was a different twist from the usual wing sauces. For $5 at Happy Hour these are great.
I also had the Reuben Eggrolls, and let me tell you, if you like Reuben sandwiches you will like these. It’s exactly what you think it is, a Reuben Sandwich without the bread but inside an eggroll instead. These were delicious and a great finger food. I also tried the Jalapeno Poppers, which were fantastic if you can handle the heat.
They serve huge burgers and sandwiches that come with a choice of fries or onion rings. The fries are fresh cut and very good. I didn’t have a burger on this trip but I saw a few of them go by. I will be trying one on my next visit. Another sandwich that caught my eye was their Pork Cutlet, a marinated pork loin in a breaded panko crust served with tonkatsu (Japanese BBQ sauce) on a Hawaiian Roll.
For those who crave something sweet you can enjoy deep fried Twinkies, a Guinness Bacon Brownie served with ice cream or a Campfire Float. The float consists of a glass of Highwater Campfire Stout draft with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. I’ll have to have one of my beer-drinking friends let me know how that one is.
As far as the beverage choices and food goes, Rebel Republic passed with flying colors and the bar has new flat screen TV’s everywhere so you can catch all the games. The wait staff is very friendly and will change the TV to the game you are looking for. The bar has that homey neighborhood bar feel to it, something that is lacking in too many of the bars in Las Vegas. This is a place you will have no problem killing a few hours watching games. In addition to their great Happy Hour specials they have even more football specials.
The prices at Rebel Republic were very reasonable and the food was very good with large portions. I give it a rating of 3.75 Forks.
