College football gets into full swing this week and there are a lot of wagering opportunities to be found. We will scope out a few plays after we handicap the first five races at Del Mar for this Wednesday, which will be our last installment as Del Mar will close Sept. 3, Labor Day weekend.
We will have the entire Del Mar card posted online for Labor Day at www.gamingtoday.com this Wednesday.
Race 1: The day starts with 2yo maiden fillies going a mile on the main. No. 3 Lesley’s Song had a big work here on the 25th and stretches out for team Jerry Hollendorfer in this her third start. No. 5 Ask the Customer went a mile on the grass here on the 10th in a nice even effort. It’s interesting that Drayden Van Dyke who rode her that day opts for No. 6 Vibrance who also went a mile on the grass here back on July 29. She also has been working well. 5-6-3
Race 2: $16K claimers go a mile on the main. No. 3 Bay Area is in from the Bay Area for trainer Jonathan Wong who has won with two of his four starters at the meet. We love Van Dyke jumping on this shipper. No. 5 Avanti Bello drops after being over his head last out. He won one race back when Flavian Prat rode him for Doug O’Neill. Prat hops back on today and will find a fast early pace. Should pounce turning for home. 5**-3
Race 3: $32K maiden 2yo fillies go sprinting five furlongs on the dirt. No. 5 Midnight Miracle gets her second start for Bob Hess. She ran here July 26 for an $80K price tag and was claimed. You think they like what they purchased? Don’t think so. They look to get some of that cash back quick as Gary Stevens gets the call today. No. 6 Disco Tale gets a major rider upgrade and if she gets some pace to run at she can pop. The leading trainer Peter Miller sends out second-time starter No. 7 Curryforthree Bang who just missed by a dwindling head here on the 2nd. 5-6-7
Race 4: $16K claimers travel a mile on the main. There is a ton of early speed in this mile dirt race so we will look for runners who will be motoring late. No. 3 Topgallant fits the bill on the drop down and he broke his maiden on this course at this distance. Trainer Dan Hendricks drops, trying to get a win at the meet. No. 4 Haylord is the price play. He was steaming home here on the 18th going 7 furlongs. Will like this mile today. No. 6 Zippy Groom will also be a big price in here; his only win came at this mile dirt distance. No. 7 So Long Sailor takes a big class drop for Miller off a big last work. Has been turfing vs. much better. That last work says he will run big. 7**-3-4-6
Race 5: $32K maiden 2yo fillies go five furlongs on the main. All we can say is this one is very ugly. No. 2 Lucky Flash showed some good early speed in her first start here on the 2nd at this level. No. 5 Zip’s Secret has been meeting straight maiden fillies on the grass. She did run well in a $50K maiden claiming dirt sprint at Santa Anita. No. 10 No Thanks Erik looks as good as any of the ones who have run in this crapshoot. 2-5-10
The last three races of the Wednesday card can be found on our web site.
Northwestern +3 at Purdue: The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back 10-win seasons and have senior QB Clayton Thorson back if his knee is OK. He is NFL material. Lot of hype for the Boilermakers this year with 53 returning lettermen but second year coach Jeff Brohm lost seven starters on defense. What we like about taking the field goal in this game is NW opened as a -2 point chalk; great value with a solid head coach. NW +3
Oregon State +38 at Ohio St.: This bettor hates laying this kind of lumber but after conversing with my friends back in Columbus, what we are looking at here is a bloodbath. If Urban the legend and all the tumble were not going on, this game would be -41. Oregon State won one game last year and will get blown out at the Horseshoe as the players make a statement of sorts. Lay it! OHIO STATE -38
Michigan -1.5 at Notre Dame: The top guns at the South Point opened this game with the Irish as a -7 point favorite. Just don’t think Jimmy V and the SP linemakers can be off this much? Yes, the Wolverines have QB Shea Patterson on deck. He was at Ole Miss but as for one tough spot to open, South Bend fans will not be kind to him. The Irish lost a lot of key starters from last year but still have 46 returning lettermen and have gone 3-1 ATS in the last four meetings. The value is with the Irish. NOTRE DAME +1.5
