How the NC Lottery Benefits Education

There’s a wonderful reason they call it the North Carolina Education Lottery: proceeds from the lottery help fund public education.

Brief History of the NC Education Lottery

Since it was instituted in March of 2006, the NC Lottery has sold more than $25 billion in various types of tickets and raised $9 billion for education programs. It was the first state lottery to experience growth in both sales and education funding in each of its first 10 years.

In October of 2006, the first drawings for Carolina Pick 3 and Carolina Cash 5 took place. In 2009, the Pick 4 game was added.

North Carolina became a member of the Powerball game network on May 30, 2006. The state has earned in excess of $1 billion for education programs from that multi-state game alone in the 17+ years since.

In addition to the money raised through ticket sales, the NC Education Lottery also employs more than 200 North Carolinians.

North Carolina State Lottery Commission and Gaming News

The more than $9 billion that has been raised for education in North Carolina will soon grow at a quicker rate when legal sports betting debuts. NC will launch its sports betting market on March 11, when several online sportsbooks open for business, including bet365 North Carolina, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, and FanDuel North Carolina.

North Carolina mobile sports betting sites will undoubtedly handle millions of dollars in wagers in the weeks and months after that market launches. Sports betting operators will be required to pay 18% of their gross gaming revenue (GGR). That could mean hundreds of millions of dollars in the future for the state’s general fund and other programs. Among the beneficiaries of tax revenue from NC sports betting will be small colleges in North Carolina.
