Plans are in the works for a new outdoor amphitheater in Sparks.

The Nugget Casino Resort, owned by Marnell Gaming, plans to build and operate an 8,958-seat open-air facility to be called the Nugget Event Center. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, The cost is expected to be approximately $6.2 million and is expected to open this summer.

“It’s a significant project,” said Mark Sterbens, general manager of the Nugget. “I think it’s going to have a high impact on the Victorian Square area.”

The plan for the Nugget Event Center includes about 10 high-profile concerts per year, which is the number that the city has permitted for the venue. In addition to concerts, the event center will play host to outdoor events tied to local stalwarts such as the Nugget Rib Cook-Off, Hot August Nights and Star Spangled Sparks.

According to the Gazette-Journal, the Nugget Event Center already has several concerts by high-profile country artists lined up for the summer and is negotiating with several more acts that Marnell Gaming believes to be a good fit for the region. The Nugget is just waiting for permission from the artists before announcing their names.

“We feel good about the local base, and our proximity with Sacramento means we have a good chance of having high occupancy in our shows,” Sterbens said. “We’re paying for top entertainers and we expect them to draw.”
