The game Big 10 fans have been waiting for all year is finally here: Ohio State visits Michigan at 12 p.m. Eastern on Saturday with a College Football Playoff spot likely on the line. And somehow, this year’s installment of the rivalry has even more at stake than just a shot at a national title for the winner.

Michigan still remains embroiled in a sign-stealing controversy that has plagued this team for weeks, though the Wolverines withdrew their appeal of the Big 10’s three-game suspension of coach Jim Harbaugh.

This game has it all: “win and you’re in” CFP stakes (barring the winner on Saturday getting upset in the Big 10 Championships), endless controversy around what Harbaugh and the Wolverines coaches knew about what Connor Stalions, and Michigan pushing for its third straight win in a rivalry the Buckeyes owned from 2004-19. OSU beat Michigan 15 times in 16 matchups over that stretch, but has not won since ’19 — The Game did not take place in ’20, and Michigan beat Ryan Day’s team by at least two touchdowns in both ’21 and ’22.

Ohio State vs Michigan Analysis and Prediction

With all due respect to Penn State (who is No. 11 in the latest CFP Rankings), Ohio State and Michigan proved once again this season that they’re on a different level than the rest of the Big 10. Saturday brings the first game this year in which neither of these teams will have a decided talent advantage over their opponent.

Questions about the impact of Harbaugh’s absence aside, this is a matchup between two teams without any real weaknesses. Per ESPN’s SP+, Michigan’s offense is No. 6 in the country, and its defense is No. 2. The Buckeyes also have an outstanding defense (No. 1 in SP+), but have not been as potent offensively (SP+ ranks the Buckeyes’ offense No. 19).

That being said, the most dynamic player on the field is OSU WR Marvin Harrison Jr. He made the difference for Ohio State against Penn State, but expect Michigan’s secondary to do whatever it takes to make someone besides Harrison beat them — even if it means favorable matchups for WR Emeka Egbuka and veteran TE Cade Stover. The concerning thing for the Buckeyes fans is that Harrison and Egbuka both had 120 yards or more receiving and a TD last year with CJ Stroud under center, and Michigan still won 45-23.

While it’s unclear whether OSU QB Kyle McCord will be able to lead his team up and down the field against Michigan’s outstanding D, it’s also fair to question whether Michigan QB JJ McCarthy is capable of a big day against Ohio State (though he did throw for 263 yards, 3 TDs, and no picks in The Game last year). McCarthy attempted just eight passes two weeks ago against Penn State as the Wolverines leaned on their defense and running game, and he struggled against Maryland last week, with just 141 yards passing, no TDs, and an interception on 23 attempts.

Given that both defenses are more trustworthy than the QBs, the Under is the best play. Ohio State’s wins over defensive-minded Notre Dame (31 total points) and Penn State (32 total points) both went well under the listed total for Saturday’s game. It’s also worth noting that Michigan’s win over the best defensive team on its schedule, the Nittany Lions, was also low-scoring (39 total points).

Pick: Under (46 at time of publishing)
