College football’s conference championship Saturday kicks off at noon Eastern on ABC with No. 7 Texas and No. 19 Oklahoma State meeting in Dallas in the Big 12 Championship game.

These teams did not meet in the regular season. Last year, Oklahoma State beat Texas 41-34 in a game the Longhorns led 34-24 late in the third quarter. Texas enters Saturday’s game at 11-1. With a win, plus favorable results in a few other games this weekend, the 11-1 Longhorns could secure a place in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma State enters the Big 12 Championship at 9-3 (7-2 Big 12) on the season, with wins in seven of its last eight.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Analysis and Prediction

Texas is heavily favored, but the Cowboys should not be taken lightly. With star running back Ollie Gordon II (No. 1 in the country with 1,580 yards rushing) leading the way, Oklahoma State has a potent offense that has scored at least 39 points five times in the last seven games. The problem for coach Mike Gundy‘s team is that Texas stops the run as well as anyone.

The Longhorns’ defensive line, anchored by tackles T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy II, allows just 85 yards rushing per game, the fourth-fewest in the nation. Texas has also held opposing running attacks to just 2.93 yards per carry. Gordon is good enough to test this front seven, but Oklahoma State will need a big game from QB Alan Bowman, who finished the regular season with 11 interceptions and just 10 passing TDs, to keep pace with Quinn Ewers and Co.

Texas showed early this year against a top-10 Alabama team that it has as much offensive firepower as anyone. Ewers has been solid all season, and he has a deep group of pass catchers led by WRs Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell. Losing RB Jonathon Brooks to a torn ACL in November was a big blow, but backups Jaydon Blue and CJ Baxter have stepped up since Brooks went down. The Texas offense was at its best last Friday against Texas Tech, running for more than 300 yards in a 57-7 drubbing of the Red Raiders.

Expect Oklahoma State to keep this one interesting for a while. Eventually, though, the Cowboys will need more from Bowman than he’s capable of against the talented Texas defense, and that will allow the Horns to not only win but cover the two-touchdown spread.

Pick: Texas
