Here’s a close look at Sunday night’s week 3 NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

The midweek weather forecast calls for temps in the low 70s, clear skies with little wind.

Green Bay Packers (1-1) at San Francisco 49ers (2-0)

  • Time: 8:20 p.m. EDT
  • Line: 49ers by 3.5 (50) (BetMGM)

The skinny: Green Bay is making its fourth trip to San Francisco the past three seasons to face the 49ers.

Facts: The Packers haven’t been this big an underdog since their visit to San Fran for the NFC title game two seasons ago, won by the 49ers 37-20 as a 7.5-point pick. It was 27-0 at halftime. Last season though, the Packers were a  7.5-point choice and prevailed 34-17, but against QB Nick Mullens, not then-injured Jimmy Garoppolo. In that playoff game, 49ers RB Raheem Mostert rushed for 220 yards, second most in history by anyone in a postseason outing, as SF totaled 285.  But he didn’t play in last year’s loss to GB and won’t again this week since he opted to have season-ending knee surgery two weeks ago. The next two guys on the depth chart aren’t at full health, either, with Elijah Mitchell, who had 104 yards in the opener vs. Detroit, sitting out midweek drills with a shoulder injury. And Trey Sermon is having post-concussion issues. In Week 2, no quarterback had a better game than Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (based on passer rating, 145.6) in the Packers’ 35-17 home win over Detroit. That came a week after Rodgers had the worst game among all passers (36.8) in a 38-3 loss to New Orleans. He was assisted in a big way vs. Detroit by RB Aaron Jones, who scored four TDs, three of which came on pass receptions. In the 49ers’ 17-11 win at Philadelphia last week, both their TD drives were 92-plus yards. Flashback to that NFC title game: Garoppolo threw only eight times in the rout, the fewest for any team the past four seasons.

Analysis: So, who are the 49ers going to lean on in the running game if Mitchell and Sermon, both questionable at midweek, aren’t able to go or are limited? San Fran fans surely weren’t filled with optimism after the 49ers picked up a guy waived by a Baltimore team that’s even more running back-strapped than the 49ers and also a player off the Cincinnati practice squad. Horrors! And defensively, the 49ers already are without their top CB, Jason Verrett, and now could be without his cohort, Emmanuel Moseley (questionable), which apparently was okay against second-year Philly QB Jalen Hurts but probably won’t be when facing Rodgers and top WR Davante Adams. And about that victory in Philly last week, the Eagles could have easily had 28 points but a FG try was blocked, they came away with no points despite a first-and-goal from the 1 in the second quarter, and a 36-yard TD pass to Jalen Reagor was called back because he stepped on the sideline chalk on his route. And as for Jimmy G, he had too many overthrows and didn’t test the Eagles deep. Without his top running talent, more will be expected from him and he is unlikely to be able to deliver while in the national spotlight.

  • Forecast: Packers 27, 49ers 21
  • Last week: 9-6-1 ATS, 10-6 SU
  • Season total: 19-12-1 (.613) ATS, 22-10 (.688) SU
