But patience will someday (soon) pay off

Usually after the morning NFL games you need to get in line early to cash a ticket or two and make some bets on the afternoon games. But where I was, there was just silence and no one lined up, except for a few parlay card bettors and the floor was just littered with ripped up tickets in what was a wild and crazy Sunday, preceded by a wild and crazy Saturday.

Bottom line: the books got the cash once again but the season is early and if we can just stay in cash maybe we can make a comeback.

The game that really got me this past week was the Cincinnati Bearcats outplaying the Sooners up and down the field, only to lose by two points as two crucial turnovers cost them the win.

The other game that peaked my interest on Saturday was how easy UCLA took care of the Texas Longhorns in Austin; now what once was a big matchup between Texas and Oklahoma this week has lost its luster as both teams look suspect.

One of the best games was Alabama coming back in Fayetteville to beat the Razorbacks 24-20 in a very gusty win in what was a real hostile environment.

Now let’s take a look at some of the games this week that we will be taking shots with.

Saturday, Oct. 2

Virginia Tech -4 at North Carolina State 9 a.m.: Undefeated N.C. State 4-0 SU and 3-0 ATS is coming off a huge win at Georgia Tech and now comes home in what could be their first loss as they play a very angry Virginia Tech team who just can’t afford another loss; the VT defense will come to play. VIRGINIA TECH -4

Temple -4 at Army 9 a.m.: The Black Knights have been playing some real good football with their only loss a heartbreaking 31-28 at the hands of Hawaii; the Owls are coming off a hard game with Penn State and just may be beat up. ARMY +4

Navy +9 at Air Force 11:30 a.m. VER TV: This game is for the trend players as the Falcons have failed to cover the spread against the Midshipmen the last eight times that they have been favored by less than 17 points; we will ride the wave and the trend and take the points. NAVY +9

Florida State -7½ at Virginia 9 a.m. (note time change): The Seminoles would love to have that game back with the Sooners but now they get another chance to prove they can win on the road and next week they will be at Miami Florida and don’t want to go there with two losses under their belt. The Cavaliers got to play a patsy last week beating VMI 48-7 but in their previous game they gave USC all they wanted in L.A., losing 17-14 in a huge effort. This looks like a low scoring game and we will take the points as the “Noles” may be looking forward. VIRGINIA +7½ AND UNDER

Florida +8½ atAlabama 5 p.m. CBS TV: In what is the game of the week, I really wanted to bet on the Tide but just can’t bring myself to lay the -8½, but they may cover and I will have them on all my teasers at -2½ or lower if the number drops and if somehow it gets down to -7, I will be all over Alabama. But as of right now I will be teasing my brains out. ALABAMA -2½ (teaser)

Penn State +7 at Iowa 5 p.m. ABC TV: I will be doing a lot of switching back between the two games as I will be all over the Hawkeyes in this game -7 and on all my teasers including my two team teaser Alabama -2½ with Iowa -1 and I will be adding Navy +15 and Virginia +13½ and some Army +10. This game is another one for the trend players as the Nittany Lions have gone 0-9 off a non conference game to a conference game. IOWA -7

Nevada -20 at UNLV 7 p.m. MTN TV: UNLV got their much needed win last week but now it will be another loss as the Wolf Pack rolls into town and they are the real deal; bet this one early as it can only go up and may be around -24 at game time as players look to get even. NEVADA -20

This past week there were a lot of nervous bettors who are in the Wynn Survivor Contest with the Ravens penciled in on their card, but the Ravens pulled it out (straight up win) or Johnny Avello would have lost about 90% of the contestants.

Steubenville Big Red update as I have been getting a lot of emails asking what about the Big Red. Well this past week they hosted the first annual “Rally in the Valley,” in what was a triple header with the Big Red taking on the top team in West Virginia Morgan Town, but they were no match for the Big Red as Big Red moved to 5-0 with a convincing 35-7 win.

The second game of the day was a nationally televised game featuring the nationally ranked Don Bosco Prep vs. St Ignatius, the top ranked team in Ohio. Bosco rolled but this was a great game to watch and you can see it again this week on Channel 49 – you will see a great high school football field and one of the best running backs in the nation. The “Rally in theValley” was a huge success and Reno S. Big Reds HC deserves a lot of credit for putting this together.

I have been asked where are my NFL picks and I reply, “Haven’t I done enough damage so far in the colleges?”

I said Steelers but starting next week I will have my key early NFL picks.
